Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity is currently accepting applications for a Classifications Specialist in the Office of Human Resources. The Classifications Specialist is a key role in Human Resources responsible for creating and maintaining agency position descriptions and organizational charts and data. This role works closely with the Human Resources Director, agency leadership and the Human Resources hiring team to prepare position descriptions for posting. The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational skills, great attention to detail, and the ability to work well with others in a fast-paced environment. Essential Functions

  • Under general direction, performs professional, complex classification functions for the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity.
  • Participates in Agency reorganizations, meets with management, reviews proposed structures for classification impact. 
  • Prepares, updates, and maintains the Agency organizational charts and employee database. 
  • Researches and prepares information for external or internal auditors, FOIA’s and other requested information pertaining to classification and organizational information.
  • Prepares and distributes agency reports.
  • Evaluates and participates in procedural processes for lay off packages.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to four (4) years of college.
  • Requires two (2) years professional human resources experience.

Specialized Skills

  • Requires two (2) years of experience clarifying and establishing positions in a bargaining unit environment, including determining appropriate position designations and exemptions in accordance with applicable classification and labor relations standards.
  • Requires one (2) years of experience conducting organizational restructuring within a bargaining unit environment, including reviewing and updating position descriptions and ensuring position changes comply with established State of Illinois classification standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers two (2) years of experience clarifying and establishing positions in a bargaining unit environment, including determining appropriate position designations and exemptions in accordance with applicable classification and labor relations standards. 
  • Prefers two (2) year of experience conducting organizational restructuring within a bargaining unit environment, including reviewing and updating position descriptions and ensuring position changes comply with established classification standards. 
  • Prefers three (3) years’ experience working in a human resources role interpreting and applying language from bargaining agreements.
  • Prefers two (2) years professional experience in workforce planning.
  • Prefers one (1) year of experience creating organizational charts using Visio or similar program.
