Job Responsibilities

Under general supervision of the Stationary Engineer -Chief, performs journey level work in the installation, maintenance and repair of sanitary fixtures, devices and assemblies, fluid transmission systems, sewage systems and piping, tubing or other conduit systems in accordance with the applicable laws, rules and codes of the State of Illinois. Instructs patients in performance of plumbing assignments. 


SPECIFICALLY: 

35%  Performs journey level work in the installation, maintenance and repair of sanitary fixtures, devices and assemblies, fluid transmission systems, sewage systems and piping, tubing or other conduit systems in accordance with the applicable laws, rules and codes of the State of Illinois. Installs, repairs and maintains pipe, tubing or other conduit systems that carry water, steam, air or other liquids and gases, such as hot and cold water supply lines, sewer pipes, drain, waste and vent pipes, gas or chemical transmission pipes, fire protection sprinkler systems, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems, backflow prevention (cross-connection control) devices and assemblies, traps and appliances such as water closets, lavatories, urinals, showers, tubs and fittings and pipe coverings.

 

25%  Measures, cuts and threads pipe, using stocks and dies, power threading machines, power saws, wrenches and pipe machines; assembles pipe sections, tubing or fittings and fills pipes or fixtures with fluids and observes pressure gauges to detect and locate leaks.

 

15%  Instructs patients in the performance of plumbing assignments.

 

10%  Maintains facility water heater and softeners; maintains underground grease and lint traps. Inspects the facility backflow preventer.

 

10%  Directs trenching, excavating and back filling operations necessary to begin or continue work on underground installations or assists others in performance of same.

 

5%  Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of high school.
  2. Requires possession of a current valid plumber's license issued by the Illinois Department of Public Health.
  3. Requires the possession of a valid certificate as a Cross-Connection Control Device Inspector (CCCDI) or the acquisition of the certificate within the probationary period of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires extensive knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods and practices of the plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning and refrigeration trades.
  • Requires working knowledge of laws relating to sanitation and public health. 
  • Requires ability to instruct and/or direct semi-skilled workers, unskilled workers, trade helpers and/or patients.
  • Requires ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, simple drawings or sketches.
  • Requires skill in the use of all tools of the plumbing trade.

Condition of Employment

  • Requires possession of a current valid plumber's license issued by the Illinois Department of Public Health.
