Position Overview

The Division of Mental Health is seeking to hire a Security Therapy Aide II for the Elizabeth Packard Mental Health Center located in Springfield Illinois to provide direct patient care to patients on a secure forensic unit for patients who need treatment for psychiatric symptoms on an assigned shift. Will serve as designated lead worker.  Coordinates the movements, conduct, activities and basic care of patients under this jurisdiction.  Provides general guidance and counseling to patients. Prepares routine reports concerning patient behavior. Records responses to treatment and/or medication. Transports/drives patients to court appearances, medical appointments and other needs outside the facility.

Essential Functions

  • Provides direct patient care to patients on a secure forensic unit for patients who need treatment for psychiatric symptoms on an assigned shift for the Elizabeth Packard Mental Health Center.

  • Serves as designated lead worker.

  • Provides physical care and support to patients.

  • Conducts formal classroom training for trainees and other new facility staff.

  • Arbitrates disputes or differences between patients.

  • Provides security during distribution of prescribed medications.

  • Records patient behavior and progress on logs, charts and reports.

  • Updates roster of patients for specific areas.

  • Transports/drives patients court appearances, medical appointments and other needs outside the facility.

  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of high school.

  • Requires two (2) years experience as a Security Therapy Aide, including successful completion of an approved Security Therapy Aide Training Program or equivalent experience.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires the ability to physically restrain patients as necessary to prevent injury to the patient or others.

  • Requires a valid drivers license.

  • Requires the ability to travel in the performance of job duties.

  • Requires the ability to utilize office equipment, including personal computers.  

  • Requires the ability to work after business hours, weekends, and holidays.

  • Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.

  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
