Position Overview

Under direction, independently performs technical accounting work in maintaining a complex, complete set of general account books.  Provides oversight and direction regarding the state's accounting system; examines, reconciles, and inputs data into the state’s computerized accounting system, reviews accounting transactions for accuracy; posts financial information to ledgers and registers, adjusts entries and reconciles financial records and documents.  Closes account books, reviews, prepares financial statements and monthly bank reconciliation for review by supervisor.  Prepares fiscal reports and oversees locally held accounts.  Reviews and prepares monthly bank reconciliations. Prepares Court of Claims departmental reports.

Job Responsibilities

30%   1.    Independently performs technical accounting work in maintaining a complex, complete set of general account books. Provides oversight and direction regarding the state's accounting system.

 

25%   2.   Creates, codes and inputs vouchers in the appropriate state computerized accounting systems for contractual and OAE expenses, including medical bills.

 

15%   3.   Serves as designated lead worker to lower level staff; assigns and reviews work; provides guidance and training to assigned staff; advises immediate supervisor regarding performance of staff.

 

15%   4.   Oversees locally held funds accounts at the center.  Makes banking deposits, writes checks, and balances statements for these accounts.  Closes account books, reviews, prepares financial statements and monthly bank reconciliations for review by supervisor.

 

10%   5.   Prepares travel vouchers for center staff; completes annual individually filed income tax returns.

 

  5%   6.   Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonable within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of two years of college and one year of technical accounting experience or four years of related clerical bookkeeping experience.  

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Requires extensive knowledge of accounting techniques, office methods and procedures.
  • Requires working knowledge of principles and functions of standard office accounting machines and equipment.  
  • Prefers prior experience working with word processing and spreadsheet software.  
  • Requires working knowledge of computerized accounting systems.  
  • Requires the ability to apply established accounting methods and techniques.  
  • Requires ability to communicate both orally and in written form.

Work Hours:  8:00 AM - 4:30 PM (Saturday & Sunday off).
