Position Overview

Under general direction and with guidance from the Chief Stationary Engineer, serves as the Assistant Stationary Chief for the Choate Mental Health Center. Assists the Chief with directing the physical plant operations and maintenance of the Center and in developing, overseeing and performing preventative maintenance program for equipment that supports the building’s operating functions. Assumes responsibilities and duties over the Center’s physical plant in the absence of the Chief. Serves as designated lead worker. Assists in the preparation of specifications for building additions, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, painting and remodeling work. Compiles the annual budget for supplies, equipment repairs and maintenance projects. Conducts inspections of the facility and the equipment; prepares reports for Chief Stationary Engineer and managers on the inspections noting any preventive maintenance that needs to be addressed. Operates equipment and tools, lifting, pushing and/or pulling equipment, machinery and materials in order to repair/maintain systems or equipment for the safe operation of facilities. Travels in performance of job duties.


Job Responsibilities

1. Serves as the Assistant Stationary Chief for the Choate Mental Health Center.

2. Serves as designated lead worker.

3. Conducts inspections of building mechanical systems and office areas.

4. Makes rounds of the boiler and mechanical rooms to read gauges and observe the operation of all equipment, systems, generators and other machinery.

5. Reviews work performed by outside contractors to ensure compliance with original requests and for final approval to process final payment noting quality of work.

6. Travels to other facilities as required providing engineer services and expertise and/or advice regarding building facility maintenance issues.

7. Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of high school.

2. Requires five years of experience in the operation of a commercial or institutional power plant or as a skilled craftsman in the mechanical or building trades

3. Requires possession of a valid certificate as a Universal Technician under U.S.E.P.A Section 608 rules or the ability to obtain one.

Conditions of Employment

1. Requires the ability to serve on-call on shifts, after business hours, weekends and holidays.

2. Requires an appropriate valid driver’s license.

3. Requires the ability to travel.

4. Requires the ability to utilize agency supplied material equipment (i.e. pager, cell phone etc.) and to be accessible via cell/pager for emergencies.

5. Requires the ability to meet all agency vaccine/health-related policies and guidance.

6. Requires the ability to pass the IDHS background check.

7. Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law
