Position Overview 

 

The Illinois Department of Transportation seeks to hire a Heavy Construction Equipment Operator. Under direct supervision of the Operations Supervisor II, this position performs a variety of tasks related to the maintenance, repair and upkeep of roads, bridges and other related structures and features of the highway system.

Essential Functions

  • Operates CDL Class A licensed vehicles including maintenance trucks, pavement marking equipment, tractors, mowing machines, snowplows, salt spreaders, and heavy road graders.
  • Operates sweepers, backhoes, loaders, vactors, gradalls, stripers and other heavy motorized equipment.
  • Performs labor relating to the maintenance of roadside and rights-of-way.
  • Operates and performs daily maintenance on dump trucks.
  • During snow and ice conditions operates snowplow.
  • Operates and maintains CDL Class A licensed vehicles or other heavy equipment such as, low boys, cranes, augers, large tractor trails, bulldozers, power shovels, concrete spreaders, paving mixers and other related construction equipment.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of those enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of eighth grade graduation.
  • Requires two years of experience operating highway construction equipment.
  • Requires one year driving experience immediately preceding appointment free from incidents which could result in license suspension or revocation.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers ability to understand and carry out oral/written instructions.
  • Prefers ability to maintain productive working relationships.

 

Conditions of Employment

    • Requires successful completion of a background investigation.
    • Requires possession of a Clas “A” CDL with appropriate endorsements, including air brakes.
    • Requires the ability to report to headquarters within 45 minutes in emergency situations.
    • Requires the ability to perform arduous labor.
    • Requires the ability to lift 50 pounds.
    • Requires the ability to work from ladders and scaffolding.
    • Requires the successful completion of a pre-employment physical and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and random drug and alcohol screening.
