Position Statement

The Office of Land Management is seeking to hire a Site Technician 2 for the Rice Lake/Banner Marsh Park in the Region 1 area.  Under direct supervision, performs semi-skilled maintenance activities associated with the operations and programs at Rice Lake/Banner Marsh Park; operates and maintains heavy equipment such as trucks, tractors, motor grader, backhoe and farming machinery of 160 h.p. for site maintenance and improvement. Performs routine maintenance of vehicles, equipment and tools. Provides training to new staff regarding site facilities, outdoor recreation equipment programs, vehicles, tools and equipment. Mows, plants trees, shrubs and grass. Makes minor repairs to plumbing and electrical systems.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Performs semi- skilled maintenance activities associated with the operations and programs at Rice Lake/Banner Marsh Park.  Operates and maintains heavy equipment such as trucks, tractors, motor grader, backhoe and farming machinery of 160 h.p. for site maintenance and improvement.  Maintains, renovates and performs construction projects for the grounds, waterways, spillways, roadways, trails, sidewalks, and wildlife habitat areas, canals, levees, and other water control structures & drainage ditches of the park. Farms for wildlife food production program.
  2. Performs routine maintenance of vehicles, equipment and tools; operates pumps, boats and water control structures for flooding and sub-impoundment areas and wildlife farming programs. Builds forms to support concrete; plows and shovels snow; patches roadways.
  3. Provides training and support to new staff regarding site's facilities and outdoor recreation programs, vehicles, tools and equipment; functionally lead works site workers engaged in site maintenance and operational activities; repairs and places duck blinds for hunts; registers hunters & tends hunter check stations; traps and bands waterfowls; sells camping permits and collects fees; repairs, builds & monitors the use of artificial nest structures such as wood duck houses, bluebird houses and goose islands.
  4. Conducts routine safety checks around buildings and gates to ensure they are properly locked; inspects public use areas for safety hazards; trains new staff on maintenance of park vehicles, tools and equipment.
  5. Mows, plants trees, shrubs and grass, clears brush and trees with chain saws and bush hogs; Assists in turf maintenance in areas of mowing and weed eating. Applies herbicides and pesticides.
  6. Sweeps and mops floors, dusts and clean furniture, washes windows; cleans and disinfects restrooms and shower buildings.
  7. Makes minor repairs to plumbing and electrical systems; installs woven/barbed wire fences; repairs roofs and re-shingles buildings on the property.
  8. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and two (2) years maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1.    Requires working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or operation of heavy equipment of farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing.
2.    Requires ability to follow written and oral instructions.
3.    Requires ability to inform visitors of site facilities, programs, rules and regulations.
4.    Requires physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair and care of site resources, artifacts, buildings and grounds.

Physical Requirements

  • Requires ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year round basis.
  • Requires ability to lift, carry, and transport loads which may exceed sixty (60) pounds.
  • Requires ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.

  • Requires ability to obtain a herbicide or pesticide applicator's license within the first 6 months of employment.

Work Hours:  1/1 to 4/30: M-F 7am-3pm; 5/1 to 10/15: M-F 7am-3pm, rotate every 3rd weekend to have Thurs-Fri off; 10/16 to 12/31:  Sun-Thurs 4am-12 Noon.
