Position Overview
This is primarily an on-the-job training position. The incumbent should learn how to enter materials test information into the Construction and Materials Management System (CMMS). The incumbent should also learn how to inspect, sample and test various materials to be incorporated into highway and bridge construction projects. The incumbent is responsible for proper documentation of inspections and tests and for attending and successfully completing assigned training which will be needed to develop the skills and knowledge to perform these duties.
Essential Functions
- Ensures timely and accurate data entry and retrieval for the district into Construction and Materials Management System (CMMS).
- Ensures material produced and supplied for projects meet the requirements of the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, project plans, and special provisions.
- Attends and successfully completes assigned training.
- Ensures proper documentation and assignment of materials and tests on projects assigned.
- Performs inspections, sampling, and testing to cover project needs.
- Prepares letters, reports, logs, and spreadsheets as directed.
- Develops a good working relationship with construction and materials personnel, contractors, producers and suppliers.
- Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum; OR two years of engineering experience.
Conditions of Employment
- Certification in, or ability to obtain certification in, Aggregate Technician, Hot Mix Asphalt Level I, PCC Level I and/or Nuclear Density training within twenty-four months of hire date.
- 24/7 emergency call availability.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Extensive districtwide travel and occasional statewide travel with overnight stays
- Occasional overtime.
- Heavy/repetitive lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work in confined spaces, climb steep terrain, wade in water, deal with poisonous plants, animals, insects, rodents and snakes.
- Ability to work outdoors in a variety of conditions including, but not limited to, inclement weather (hot, cold, wet, windy, muddy), active construction sites and roadways open to traffic.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment physical and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
- Successful completion of a background screening.
