Position Overview

This position is responsible for preparing right-of-way (ROW) plans, parcel sketches, legal descriptions, and court exhibits of a complex nature and working directly with field survey notes and title reports. Performing land boundary surveys, courthouse research, communicating with local land surveyors, locating and/or establishing section and quarter section corners, recording of monument records, and determining the location of existing right of way lines.

Essential Functions

  • Prepares all district plats, plans and exhibits used in acquisition and condemnation activities.
  • Ensures that land surveys are conducted in accordance with the Illinois Revised Statutes.
  • Writes accurate and complete legal descriptions used to acquire title to land.
  • Trains, motives, and evaluates subordinate personnel.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current registration as a licensed Professional Land Surveyor in Illinois.
  • Four years of experience in the practice of land surveying.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and use in Power Geopak and Open Roads Design.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principle and practices of land surveying and the use of modern survey equipment.
  • Knowledge of real estate procedures.
  • Ability to perform difficult technical research and to make competent decisions on survey related matters.
  • Ability to supervise survey crew.
  • Strong Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong human relations skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Conditions of Employment

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Extensive districtwide travel and some statewide, which may include overnight stays.
  • Occasional overtime during evenings and weekends.
  • Outdoor work in a variety of conditions and weather (hot, cold, wet, windy, muddy) including, but not limited to, active construction sites, roadways open to traffic and/or off-road areas inhabited by insects, snakes, poisonous plants, etc.
  • Ability to successfully pass a background check.
