POSITION SUMMARY

The Illinois Department of Central Management Services is looking to bring aboard a Stationary Engineer who receives day to day assignments from Assistant Chief Engineer for Central Management Services operated facilities within the Southern Illinois Region and other assigned facilities. Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to making rounds of buildings' boiler and mechanical rooms at regular intervals, testing, and recording water used for consumption for generating steam and hydraulic hot water, chilled water systems, and adding appropriate chemicals for proper maintenance of systems such as chilled and hot water loops and cooling towers. This position will also confer with tenant agencies to resolve problems related to building services and assist other CMS facilities in the region with the installation, maintenance, and repair of various mechanical systems to ensure proper functioning of systems and equipment.

POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Under direct supervision of the Southern Facility Manager, receives day-to-day guidance and assignments from the Assistant Chief Stationary Engineer.

  • Makes rounds of buildings’ interior and exterior, including boiler and mechanical rooms at regular intervals.

  • Observes and examines the operation and efficiency of power generating systems, and other machinery, and other building systems.

  • Tests and records water used for consumption for generating steam and hydraulic hot water, chilled water systems, and adds appropriate chemicals for proper maintenance of systems including chilled and hot water loops and cooling towers.

  • Travels to other CMS facilities within the Central and Southern Region, including the Illinois State Police (ISP) DuQuoin, ISP Carmi, ISP Ullin, Carbondale, & Marion Regional Buildings, to ensure all mechanical operations are functioning properly and assists in the installation, maintenance, and repair of various building and mechanical systems.

  • Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of eight years of elementary school.
  • Requires four years’ experience in HVAC, power plant operation, and in firing and shutting down high-pressure and/or low-pressure stationary boilers. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prefers working knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques used in the operation of high-pressure and or low-pressure coal, gas, or oil-fired boilers and their auxiliaries.   
  • Prefers elementary knowledge of the operations of electrical generating equipment. 
  • Prefers working knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques used in the operation, maintenance, and diagnostics of commercial HVAC systems.
  • Prefers extensive knowledge of performing repairs and maintaining equipment and machinery.
  • Prefers working knowledge of keeping written logs of daily operations. 
  • Prefers three (3) years’ professional experience following oral and/or written instructions effectively.
  • Prefers three (3) years’ professional experience operating hand and power tools effectively.
  • Prefers working knowledge of handling chemicals in the maintenance of systems. 
  • Prefers working knowledge of reading and understanding mechanical blueprints and technical equipment manuals.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • This position requires the applicant to pass an Illinois State Police fingerprint background check.
  • Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime.
  • Requires possession of or ability to obtain a valid certificate as a Universal Technician under U.S.E.P.A Section 608 rules.
  • Requires the ability to lift, move, push, and pull equipment/machinery up to 50 pounds and up to 100 pounds with assistance.
  • Requires the ability to sit and stand for long periods of time without assistance.
  • Requires the ability to maneuver and work in crawl spaces, work outdoors, rooftops, and on uneven ground.
  • Requires the ability to work from ladders, scaffolds, and heights up to 25 feet above ground.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license and the ability to travel.
  • Requires the ability to utilize agency supplied materials/equipment (i.e., mobile phone, laptop, etc.).
  • Requires the ability to work shifts, including weekends and holidays.
