Position Statement

Under direct supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled and routine work associated with the operation and maintenance of outdoor recreational programs at Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish & Wildlife Area. 

Job Responsibilities

  1. Performs semi-skilled work building and maintaining various types of trails; work includes moving dirt and gravel with tracked tractors and end loaders with up to 110 hp; cuts, lays and fills Geoweb material with gravel, wood or dirt; waterbars will be placed as needed; trees and limbs which fall or grow into the trail will be removed; trails will also be mowed as needed with small tractor. 
  2. Operates heavy equipment such as bulldozers, backhoes, tree spades, 80hp farm machinery for site projects and release of game for put/take or field trial events; operates equipment and uses tools for wildland fire suppression and prescribed bums; operates 2 ½ ton truck with Air Brakes pulling a 24ft trailer to haul equipment used In trail construction and farming.
  3. Mows grass, trims shrubs/trees, hauls trash, plows snow; applies herbicides; disinfects washrooms and fixtures; maintains vehicles and equipment.
  4. On a seasonal basis, serves as lead worker for seasonal workers, volunteers, prison crews engaged in routine site maintenance and operational activities; provides leadership and direction to volunteers, conservation workers, and other site staff provides on-the-job training to seasonal employees and volunteers.
  5. Inspects site areas for public health and safety hazards; insure gates are properly locked; informs visitors of rules and regulations; in the event of emergencies or disturbances, contacts proper authorities; registers hunters and tends hunter check stations; sells camping permits and collects fees.
  6. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires education and experience equivalent to completion of high school.
  2. Requires two (2) year's maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires working knowledge of equipment and tools used in the trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment, farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing.
  • Requires ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Requires ability to inform visitors of site facilities, programs, rules and regulations.
  • Requires physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair and care of site resources, artifacts, buildings and grounds. 

Physical Requirements

  • Requires ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year round basis.
  • Requires ability to lift, carry, and transport loads which may exceed sixty (60) pounds.
  • Requires ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.

Employment Conditions

  • Requires possession of a Class A CDL with Air Brakes designation.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a pesticide applicator/operators license.
  • Ability to pass a background check.

Work Hours:  Mid-Jan to Oct: Tues-Sat 7:30am-3:30pm; Nov. to Mid-Jan: Wed-Sun 5:00am-1:00pm (1/2 hr. lunch)
