Position Overview

The Division of Mental Health is seeking to hire a Security Officer for the Chester Mental Health Center located in Chester, Illinois to provide safety and protection to the facility, patients, and staff on the grounds of the facility on an assigned shift. Conducts inspections of the parking area enforcing parking and traffic violations. Conducts regular and periodic inspections ensuring that all doors and windows are secure. Provides access of patients to recreation area.

Essential Functions

  • Provides safety and protection to the facility, patients, and staff on the grounds of the facility on an assigned shift.
  • Conducts inspections of the parking area enforcing parking and traffic violations, making certain all employees and authorized vehicles are properly secured.
  • Conducts regular and periodic inspections ensuring that all doors and windows are secure.
  • Provides access of patients to recreation area and allows for patient exits ensuring a proper count at all times.
  • Drives state owned vehicles to pick-up and deliver mail, make bank deposits, pharmacy runs or to pick up items ordered by patients.
  • Assists, upon request, internal operations in cases of emergency or other serious security situations.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school.

*Qualifying state employees in the Upward Mobility Program shall have the stated requirements of this classification waived by successful completion of specific proficiency tests and training programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of experience working with security requirements and regulations for a public or private organization.
  • Two (2) years of experience in the use of security enforcement practices and techniques.
  • Two (2) years of experience working with emergency response procedures including fire safety and controls for a public or private organization.
  • Two (2) years of experience providing initial responses to security breaches and safety hazards.
  • Two (2) years of experience communicating effectively both orally and in writing.
  • One (1) year of experience utilizing Microsoft Office with basic computer skills.   

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires the ability to travel in the performance of job duties.
  • Requires the ability to obtain and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
  • Requires the ability to become OIG rule 50.3 certified within 90 days of employment.
  • Requires the ability to climb stairs, chase runaways and physically restrain and control patients.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
