Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Transportation seeks to hire an Automotive Mechanic. Under the immediate supervision of the Operations Supervisor, the Automotive Mechanic maintains and repairs a fleet of vehicles at a field headquarters and ensures compliance with departmental safety rules.

Essential Functions
- Performs mechanical repairs on vehicles assigned to field headquarters and also conducts repairs at the site of a disabled vehicle.
- Performs regular inspection and maintenance of vehicles on an established schedule.
- Maintains accurate and timely records of all maintenance and repairs performed.
- Performs minor welding and fabrication
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school, or coursework in vehicle repair and maintenance, or completion of an approved training course.
- Requires experience necessary to qualify as a skilled mechanic.
- Requires a valid Commercial Driver's License Class A.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefer extensive knowledge of mechanical hand tools and testing equipment.
- Prefer ability to work well with others.
- Prefer working knowledge of standard vehicle repair and maintenance practices and techniques, occupational hazards and applicable safety measures.
- Prefer skill in the use of tools and the operation of the machines and equipment employed in motor repair and adjustment.
- Prefer skill and ability to work from sketches, drawings, and blueprints as well as oral and written instructions.
- Prefer ability to locate and adjust mechanical feedbacks in motors and equipment and make necessary repairs.
- Prefer ability to weld and perform simple blacksmith operations.
- Prefer ability to prepare work activity reports.
- Prefer ability to perceive objects with sharpness.
Conditions of Employment
- Successful completion of a background investigation.
- Occasional statewide travel with occasional overnight stays to make equipment repairs at the jobsite.
- Must reside within a 45-minute travel time frame from the primary work location.
- Requires overtime and on-call status during snow and ice season.
