Position Overview
Under direct supervision, for a period not longer than twelve months, participates in an agency sponsored training program; studies and becomes proficient in the complex laboratory procedures used for testing specimens for biological and chemical agents related to an event of terrorism; infectious disease outbreaks, and other public health emergencies; including foodborne and waterborne outbreaks.
Job Responsibilities
- Receive comprehensive bench side laboratory training in the performance of the complex procedures used to set up the various tests performed on specimens received in the laboratory that may contain biological or chemical agents.
- Receive training in processing and preparation of specimens received for biological or chemical agent testing; learns sterile techniques and implementation of standard laboratory procedures.
- Receive training in the preparation and standardization of reagents.
- Receive training in sterile techniques, handling hazardous specimens, and select agent rules required for safe performance of diagnostic procedures in a clinical laboratory.
- Receive training in using instruments required for performance of laboratory procedures including cleaning and calibrating.
- Receive training in recording and reporting results; acquires the skills required to assess and verify the validity of test results through the evaluation of quality sample values.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Requires a Bachelor’s degree in one of the chemical, biological, medical technology, clinical laboratory sciences, or physical sciences from a recognized college or university.
- Requires working knowledge of laboratory techniques used for scientific laboratory examinations.
- Requires ability to identify clinical microorganisms.
