Position Overview

The Illinois Sentencing Policy Advisory Council (SPAC) is seeking to hire a Confidential Assistant to support our team to assist lawmakers and stakeholders in developing data-driven sentencing and corrections policies. The position will work primarily with the education policy team to provide administrative support to the Executive team, help plan and carry out Council meetings, use various programs to design and edit infographics and visualizations of data, research and analyze legislative proposals, and occasionally manipulate and analyze criminal justice data.

Essential Functions

  • Serves as confidential assistant to executive staff, participates in developing and implementing policies related to research and fiscal analysis; assists in developing long-term research plans, analytical protocols for analysis of proposed sentencing legislation and its effect on current policies or practices, and provides fiscal impact and cost-benefit analysis to support development and implementation of evidence-based sentencing policies statewide.
  • Analyzes specialized professional information; presents research results and policy analysis to all levels of state and local policy makers.
  • Provides support at meetings regarding research, fiscal analysis and implementing evidence based sentencing policies with federal criminal justice organizations and national stakeholder groups, research communities, including the state and local criminal justice agencies, and academic communities.
  • Research costs and policy impacts of existing programs; independently performs special projects for executive staff, which are complex and sensitive in nature. Analyzes and interprets data to evaluate correctional resources and policies at the State and local levels.
  • Research and draft answers to questions raised by legislative, executive, and judicial branch actors regarding sentencing policy and practices; participates in SPAC meetings; participates in the preparation and presentation of special reports to SPAC and outside organizations.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned that are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires prior experience equivalent to two (2) years of progressively responsible administrative experience in a public or business organization.
  • Requires prior experience equivalent to two years of progressively responsible experience in criminal justice research.
  • Requires prior experience equivalent to two years of progressively responsible experience in statistical research.

Agency Statement: The Sentencing Policy Advisory Council (SPAC) is the sentencing commission for the State of Illinois. We are a small, collaborative team with work that ranges from system-wide fiscal impact analysis to producing research reports to answering questions from policymakers, the executive branch and judicial branch, and other criminal justice stakeholders. SPAC is non-partisan and does not support or oppose specific criminal justice policies.
