The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire temporary Winter Salaried Highway Maintainers for the 2024/2025 Snow and Ice Season. The Winter Salaried Highway Maintainer (monthly snowbird) performs a variety of tasks related to the maintenance, repair and upkeep of roads, bridges and other related structures and features.

Job Responsibilities

30%

Operates CDL Class A or B licensed vehicles.
• Operates CDL licensed vehicles including maintenance trucks, tractors, mowing machines, snowplows, salt spreaders as well as other equipment including compressors, jack hammers, for the use of maintaining and snow plowing during the winter season.
• Operates wheel loaders, backhoe loaders, rollers, excavators, road graders and cranes in repairing, replacing or patching concrete.
• Assists in servicing, washing and making minor repairs of equipment such as trucks, tractors, mowing machines, snowplows, salt spreaders, compressors, graders and other light highway equipment.

 

25%

During snow and ice conditions, assists in snow and ice control.
• Operates snowplows, spreads salt and sand.
• Plows and removes snow.
• Responds to emergency weather situations, as instructed verbally or in writing, to inspect roadways and remove hazardous material/obstacles, some weighing up to 50 pounds, from roadways and drainage areas.

Performs labor relating to the maintenance of roadside and right-of-way.
• Cuts trees, grass, weeds and brush.
• Fills cracks and potholes.
• Removes and disposes of trash, dead animals and other debris along highways.

 

10%

Performs labor relating to the maintenance of roads.
• Repairs, replaces, and patches concrete, bituminous and other road surfaces.
• Repairs and cleans culverts, bridges, storm sewers, gutters and other drainage facilities.

 

5%

Performs routine housekeeping duties and other tasks associated with the general care of the headquarters grounds.

Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of high school.
  2. For seasonal employees only, possession of a Class B CDL with appropriate endorsements, to include X or N and no airbrake restrictions, is acceptable for a period of two years. At the beginning of the third year form the initial hire date, a seasonal employee must possess a Class A CDL.
  3. Requires one year driving experience immediately preceding appointment free of incidents which could result in license suspension or revocation.

2. Requires successful completion of a pre-employment background investigation, a pre-employment physical examination, a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening as well as on-going random drug and alcohol screenings.
3. Requires the ability to perform arduous labor outdoors in a variety of adverse conditions including, but not limited to, hot, cold, wet, windy, muddy, confined spaces, active construction sites, climbing steep terrain, roadways open to traffic and wading in water while dealing with adverse environmental conditions such as poisonous plants, animals, insects, rodents and snakes.
4. Requires the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions while maintaining productive working relationships.
5. This position is considered medium work as defined by the US Dept. of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(c)).  Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
6. Operations employees are subject to call at any hour of the day or night on any day of the year in order to respond to emergencies outside of normal work hours. As a result, negotiated rate employees are required to work reasonable amounts of overtime when necessary. Any bargaining unit employee who may be required to engage in a call out shall respond to the call as quickly as practicable but in no situation can the response time exceed 45 minutes.
