The Illinois Department of Labor (IDOL) is one of Illinois' most important and dynamic Agencies. The Industrial Services Consultant II position is an integral part of the Illinois On-site Safety and Health Consultation Program which offers no cost and confidential occupational safety and health services to Illinois’ small and medium sized businesses committed to improving workplace safety and health.  Through on-site visits, the position works with employers to identify workplace safety and health hazards, provide advice for compliance with OSHA standards, and assist in establishing and improving safety and health programs.  If you are interested in helping our exceptional team of professionals achieve our mission and you possess the qualifications listed above, we invite you to apply for this position.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Conducts on-site consultations, observes work operations, and notes hazardous conditions and unsafe work practices

  2. Performs opening and closing conferences to discuss the rights, obligations and program functions under the Illinois On-site Safety and Health Consultation Program and Federal and State OSHA standards with employers and employee representatives

  3. Prepares consultation reports including hazards noted, program deficiencies and recommendations for corrective action

  4. Attends training classes, courses, and conferences to upgrade skills and knowledge and to keep abreast of Federal and State OSHA standards

  5. Assists in providing on-the-job training

  6. Performs other duties as assigned which are reasonable within the scope of the duties enumerated above

 

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four years college with coursework in engineering, physical sciences (physics, chemistry, biology, etc.), or safety/health management
  2. Requires one year of experience in industrial or construction firms engaged in industrial, mechanical or construction processes such as: insurance loss control representative, fire safety inspector, safety engineer or any equivalent combination of training and experience

Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance)

  1. 1 year of experience working with federal OSHA laws, standards and regulations and applicable state statutes, rules, and regulations
  2. 1 year of experience utilizing effective method of consultation inspections
  3. 1 year of experience utilizing fundamental principles of sound safety and health practices and methods
  4. 1 year of experience working with standard types of machinery and equipment employed in industrial or construction firms
  5. 1 year of experience ascertaining facts by observation of the workplace and conference with employer's representatives and employees
  6. 1year of experience in determining the degree of worker involvement and risk, and to determine the severity of the hazard
  7. 1 year of experience advising employers of hazardous situations, how to correct or eliminate them and to prepare field consultation inspection reports
  8. 1 year of experience developing and providing training to employers and employees
  9. Prefers Safety Professional Certification (CSP)

 

Conditions of Employment

  1. Requires the possession of a valid Illinois driver's license and automobile liability insurance
  2. Requires Ability to travel throughout the State to conduct investigations
  3. Requires ability to pass a medical evaluation
  4. Requires ability to wear a negative pressure respirator and walk for extended periods of time while carrying equipment weighing 15 to 30 pounds
