Position Overview
Travels to state and local government employers to perform occupational safety and health enforcement inspections. Explains the purpose and scope of the inspection to employer and employee representatives at an opening conference. Reviews employer safety records. Thoroughly inspects the workplace for hazardous conditions.
Essential Functions
- Travels to state and local government employers to perform occupational safety and health enforcement inspections.
- Employs a wide range of complex measuring and sampling devices to determine worker exposure to hazards.
- Writes a report of each inspection.
- Provides technical assistance to employers and employees concerning occupational safety and health programs.
- Attends training sessions, classes, and courses to maintain and update knowledge of Federal and State OSHA standards, policies and procedures and professional safety and health practices.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires a bachelor's degree with coursework in industrial hygiene, engineering, physical sciences (physics, chemistry, biological, etc.), environmental or public health, or occupational safety and health.
- Requires three years of professional experience in the industrial hygiene, engineering, or environmental/public health field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Five (5) years of experience as a federal OSHA, Illinois OSHA, or OSHA state plan industrial hygienist.
- Five (5) years of experience operating and performing user-level maintenance on industrial hygiene sampling equipment to determine compliance with applicable standards under 29 CFR Part 1910 and Part 1926.
- Five (5) years of experience using the OSHA Information System.
- Five (5) years of experience conducting occupational fatality investigations.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate. Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
- Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This may require the ability to work evenings and weekends.
- This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Requires ability to attend seminars, conferences, and trainings to stay current on methods, tools, ideologies, or other industry related topics relevant to the job duties.
- Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
- Requires the ability to walk extensively, to climb ladders and to use personal protective equipment such as hard hats, safety shoes, safety glasses and protective clothing.
- Requires the ability to wear a negative pressure respirator (NPR) and walk for extended periods of time while carrying equipment weighing 15-30 pounds. A powered air purifying respirator (PAPR) may be substituted for an NPR as determined by a physician or licensed health care professional.
- Must pass a pre-employment screening.
- Must live within 60 miles of the county seat of Cook County.
