Position Overview
The Industrial Services Hygienist position is an integral part of Illinois OSHA’s mission to ensure safe and healthy working conditions by assisting employers with complying with occupational safety and health standards and providing training, outreach, education, and assistance to employers and employees throughout Illinois. Our vision is to be an occupational safety and health resource which is realized through timely, practical, useful, courteous, and professional services, all of which is built on the premise that occupational deaths, injuries, and illnesses can be prevented.
Essential Functions
- Conducts on-site consultation visits at workplaces to assess compliance with occupational safety and health standards with a focus on industrial hygiene.
- Travels to conduct walk-throughs of the work sites, observing work practices and operation processes to identify occupational hazards and determine sampling strategies.
- Performs noise and air sampling surveys and utilizes other technical field equipment.
- Prepares the case file for review and submits a technical report to the business establishment documenting the
survey including sampling techniques, methods, sampling results, and hazards identified and corrective action recommendations. - Attends meetings, conferences, and training sessions for the purpose of updating knowledge and skill in OSHA standards, policies, and procedures.
- Assists the program in training of new industrial hygienists at onsite consultation visits. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications
- Requires a bachelor's degree with coursework in industrial hygiene, engineering, physical sciences (physics, chemistry, biological, etc.), environmental or public health, or occupational safety and health.
- Requires three years of professional experience in the industrial hygiene, engineering, or environmental/public health field.
Preferred Qualifications
- One (1) year of knowledge and understanding of federal OSHA laws, standards, and regulations.
- One (1) year of knowledge of industrial hygiene concepts, common industrial occupational diseases, health hazards, and toxic sources.
- One (1) year of experience operating, maintaining and using detection and measurement equipment.
- One (1) year of professional knowledge of consensus health standards (ACGIH and NIOSH).
- One (1) year of experience advising and assisting employers with safety and health compliance.
- One (1) year of experience preparing and analyzing technical reports.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires the ability to wear a negative pressure respirator (NPR) and walk for extended periods of time while carrying equipment weighing 15-30 pounds. A powered air purifying respirator (PAPR) may be substituted for an NPR as determined by a physician or licensed health care professional.
- Requires ability to pass a medical evaluation.
- Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This may require the ability to work evenings and weekends.
- This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Requires ability to attend seminars, conferences, and trainings to stay current on methods, tools, ideologies, or other industry related topics relevant to the job duties.
- Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.

- Requires ability to to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate. Requires appropriate, valid driver's license.
