Position Overview

We are hiring a Legal Student Intern (Student Intern) for the Legal Services Office located in Chicago, Illinois. This position is responsible for conducting legal research, assisting attorneys with discovery and other litigation support, and appearing before the Illinois Independent Tax Tribunal. Essential Function
- Under immediate supervision, for a period not to exceed four (4) years, on a full- or part-time basis, while actively enrolled in college, or in conjunction with a recognized college or university work study program, receives controlled assignments in Legal Services to receive practical experience in a technical, professional, or administrative field commensurate with their academic level/degree.
- In a controlled environment, receives proven mentor-style guidance and instruction with emphasis on gaining knowledge and experience in all legal processes within the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR).
- Attends and participates in a variety of meetings, which provide a broad overview of IDOR legal and tax processing methods, procedures, and related operations.
- Participates in trainings, seminars, and programs designed for professional and personal development.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school and active enrollment at a college.
- Requires no previous work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers active enrollment in a Juris Doctor (J.D.) program at an accredited law school.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires the ability to successfully complete a tax compliance and fingerprint-based background check.
- This position has been found to meet the requirements in section 4A-101 of the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act requiring the occupant/employee to file a Statement of Economic Interest. The Illinois Governmental Ethics Act (5 ILCS 420/4A et seq.) requires certain state officials and employees to file annual Statements of Economic Interest with the Office of the Secretary of State that will be made available for examination and copying by the public. All employees required to file a Statement of Economic Interest are also required to file the Supplemental Statement of Economic Interest with the Executive Ethics Commission. (See Executive Order 15-09) Fines and penalties apply to untimely filings.
