Under general supervision of a registered nurse, independently performs a variety of skilled practical nursing functions for physically ill, disabled or geriatric residents in an assigned nursing unit and shift; performs selected nursing functions in situations which do not require the specialized knowledge and skill of a registered nurse.

 

  1. Independently performs a variety of skilled practical nursing functions for physically ill, disabled or geriatric residents in an assigned nursing unit and shift; carries out assigned nursing procedures, such as administers medication, injections and treatments, takes and records temperatures, pulses, respirations and blood pressures, applies and changes dressings, performs catheterizations and monitors IV’s; records the administration of medications and treatments; prepares patient progress notes, reports, charts and records which are descriptive of the patient’s condition. 
  2. Provides for the emotional and physical comfort and security of residents; assists other staff with activities of daily living for residents; instructs residents in the development of self-help skills to the extent they are capable; ambulates, moves and transports residents in beds, wheelchairs, stretchers and lifts using proper lifting techniques.
  3. Observes, records and reports to physicians and registered nurses or supervisory nurse the symptoms, reactions, and changes in residents’ conditions.
  4. Assists in maintaining working and living areas and supplies in good order.
  5. Assists in providing guidance to nursing assistants relative to nursing techniques.
  6. Performs selected nursing functions in situations which do not require the specialized knowledge and skill of a registered nurse; adheres to the philosophy, objectives, policies and standards of nursing service and of the facility.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

 

 

Requires Illinois license as a practical nurse. Requires one year of practical nursing experience. This class is included as an Upward Mobility Program credential title. Requires extensive knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice and recent developments in the field of geriatric nursing. Requires visual, auditory and finger and hand dexterity, the ability to record appropriate information and written and verbal communication skills. Requires extensive knowledge of current Illinois Department of Public Health regulations. Requires physical ability to walk, stand and sit for extended amounts of time and to lift up to 50 pounds. Honorable discharge from the U.S. Military preferred.
