Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking to hire a Licensed Practical Nurse for the Chicago Veterans’ Home. This position serves under direct supervision of the Nursing Supervisor, performing a variety of experienced practical nursing functions for the physically ill, handicapped or geriatric patients on an assigned shift and nursing unit. Job Responsibilities

  1. 25% Under the general supervision, independently performs a variety of skilled practical nursing functions for physically ill, disabled, or geriatric residents in an assigned nursing unit and shift.
  2. 25% Observes, records and reports to physicians, registered nurses, or the supervisory nurse the symptoms, reactions, and changes in residents’ conditions.
  3. 15% Provides for the emotional and physical comfort and security of residents.
  4. 15% Assists in maintaining working and living areas and supplies in good order
  5. 10% Assists in providing guidance to nursing assistants relative to nursing techniques
  6. 5% Performs selected nursing functions in situations which do not require the specialized knowledge and skill of a registered nurse.
  7. 5% Performs other duties as assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires Illinois license as a practical nurse.
  2. Requires one (1) year of practical nursing experience.

Conditions of Employment

  1. Requires ability pass a background check.
  2. Requires ability meet all agency vaccine/health-related policies and guidance.
  3. Requires ability pass a drug screen and pre-employment physical.
  4. Requires ability establish rapport with individuals.
  5. Requires ability utilize office equipment, including personal computers.
  6. Requires ability acquire and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
  7. Requires ability attend seminars, conferences, and trainings to stay current on methods, tools, ideologies, or other industry related topics relevant to the job duties.
  8. Requires ability to travel in the performance of job duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
  9. This position is considered sedentary work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(a)). Sedentary work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time and requires occasional lifting, carrying, walking, and standing unassisted.
  10. On-call and overtime are a condition of employment, and you may be required to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime, and may be required to work alternating weekends. This requires the ability to work evenings and weekends. This also requires the ability to work in a 24 hour ‘on call’ capacity.
