Position Overview
Under general supervision, performs standard and specialized microbiological analyses on environmental samples submitted to the Chicago Public Health Laboratory. Assumes responsibility for accuracy of tests and reporting of results. Assists in performance of highly specialized procedures and in the training of lower level personnel.
Job Responsibilities
- Performs specialized and difficult microbiological analytical work and procedures for the isolation, identification or enumeration of organisms from environmental specimens, which may include the practice of bacteriology, mycology and parasitology.
- Provides assistance to other units.
- Verifies accuracy of procedures through related quality control and proficiency testing programs.
- Records and reports results of examinations accurately.
- Performs routine and preventive maintenance, calibration and care of standard and specialized laboratory equipment.
- Prepares special culture media, reagents, solutions and stains for use in microbiological analyses.
- Conduct training of new employees in Environmental lab procedures.
- Order commodities used in the lab as needed.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonable within the scope of those enumerated above.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Requires a bachelor’s degree in microbiology, biology or related field from a recognized college or university supplemented by one year’s professional experience in testing of specimens submitted for diagnosis of infectious diseases, or in the testing of foods, dairy products, ware samples, or biological products.
- Requires a working knowledge of methods and techniques in environmental laboratory analyses; the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
- Requires ability to conduct specialized lab experiments; interpret complex results; maintain accurate results; understand and follow oral and written directions.
