Job Responsibilities

  1. Coordinates the reception area for the Chicago Office of the Illinois Department of Labor; greets visitors, checks in clients scheduled for hearings; directs individuals to appropriate section for assistance. 
  2. Answers the main agency telephone line; disseminates technical information in response to questions concerning the Minimum Wage and overtime Law, Wage Payment and collection Act, Six Day Week Law, Child Labor Law as well as other Illinois labor laws; directs callers to other state and federal agencies as necessary. 
  3. Dispenses detailed information and assistance Spanish speaking visitors seeking guidance from the agency; monitors the hearing schedule to assure that delays in the process do not unnecessarily inconvenience the public.
  4. Records information taken from wage claim applications on file folders for use in the wage claim section; enters data relating to fair labor cases into mainframe computer system.
  5. Answers telephone requests for agency literature; writes orders and prepares information for mailing.
  6. Types a variety of complex forms, letters, notices, and envelopes as requested; proofreads material for accuracy of grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  7.  Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school and two years of office experience.
  2. Requires ability to speak and write Spanish at a colloquial skill level.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Requires ability to keyboard accurately at 45 w.p.m.
  2. Requires ability to operate commonly used manual and automated office equipment and perform routine maintenance.
  3. Requires elementary knowledge of the agency's programs, laws, rules and regulations.
