Position Overview
Under direct supervision, during an assigned shift, performs law enforcement duties providing for the safety and protection of life and property to state owned or occupied facilities and grounds for the Division of Patrol (including 555 West Monroe Street, Chicago, 160 North LaSalle Street, Chicago, 115 South LaSalle Street, Chicago) performs duties involving crime and fire protection, security, traffic control, and preliminary incident investigations; carries firearms and exercises police powers as necessary to enforce federal and state laws, county and local ordinances. This position supports the Protective Services Unit, whose mission is to promote public safety by providing professional and effective police and security services for employees and citizens.

Essential Functions
- Patrols assigned area by foot or vehicle, serving as a visible deterrent to crime and remains alert to any problems with regards to safety, security and protection of property, personnel and visitors to state owned or occupied facilities and grounds.
- Maintains peace and order on state property.
- At state complexes with parking and streets within agency authority, enforces parking regulations, regulates traffic, assures vehicles are safeguarded.
- Inspects state facilities to ensure proper precautions are taken for fire protection.
- Apprehends suspect(s) and makes arrest(s) as necessary.
- Prepares and submits thorough field reports, incident reports, records and logs according to divisional procedures.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school.
- Requires graduation from an accredited basic law enforcement academy with an Illinois certification as a police officer
- Requires one year of law enforcement experience as a police officer.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers (3) three years of professional experience utilizing all applicable federal and state laws, county and city ordinances.
- Prefers (3) three years of professional experience utilizing the functions and interrelationships of law enforcement jurisdictions.
- Prefers advanced skill in the care and use of firearms and related weapons.
- Prefers ability to pass minimum physical fitness standards as defined by departmental policy.
- Prefers ability to use courtesy, firmness and tact in relations with the general public and employees working within the facility.
- Prefers ability to work independently and to recognize and respond to emergency situations quickly and effectively.
- Prefers ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions and to relate information clearly and accurately as necessary.
- Prefers ability to complete, accurate reports relevant to accidents, rule violations, arrests and other police and security matters.
- Prefers ability to testify in court accurately and succinctly.
Employment Conditions
- Requires ability to pass the Illinois State Police background check
- Requires ability to pass a drug test.
- Required to be fingerprinted.
- Successfully pass Physical Fitness Inventory Tests at the beginning and annually throughout employment.
- Successfully qualify with appropriate firearms as defined by departmental policy and applicable law including skill in the use, care and safety of such weapons.
- Currently possess and successfully maintain an Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board Full-Time Law Enforcement Certification.
- Ability to pass and maintain LEADS certification.
