The Illinois Department of Revenue is seeking candidates for a Revenue Tax Specialist I position in our Chicago Operations Division. Candidates should be capable of adapting to change, providing excellent customer service to taxpayers, and working well in a collaborative environment.

Job Responsibilites

  • Under general supervision at a developmental level, performs technical analysis of routine and involved original and amended tax returns.
  • Independently performs research necessary for resolution of discrepancies or deficiencies.
  • Recommends approval and denial of claims for credit.
  • Corresponds and/or confers with taxpayers and their representatives (via both oral and written communication) regarding account status, laws administered by the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR), additional documentation or forms needed to resolve discrepancies, balances owed, etc.
  • Receives progressively more difficult on-the-job training and applies this training as warranted.
  • Serves as a member of special project or test teams, performing specific studies during the development and testing of new procedures and/or automated systems.
  • Reconciles receipts and dispatches cash, checks, and documents to a central location via prescribed methods.
  • Maintains a variety of production records and inventory reports.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor's degree.
  • Requires completion of the Revenue Tax Specialist Trainee Program OR requires nine years' Department of Revenue experience, including completion of the Revenue Tax Specialist Trainee Program.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires working knowledge of current Illinois and federal tax laws, rules and regulations and out-of­ state filing requirements.
  • Requires working knowledge of tax terminology, forms and documents utilized in the processing of tax returns and supporting documentation.
  • Requires working knowledge of methods and procedures used in compiling and recording statistical information.
  • Requires working knowledge of manual and automated files, procedural manuals and other related materials utilized in the research and analysis of tax returns and supporting documentation for compliance with applicable tax regulations.
  • Requires working knowledge of tax accounting theory, principles and practices.
  • Requires working knowledge of computer systems as related to the processing of various tax information.
  • Requires working knowledge of manual and automated office equipment.
  • Requires working knowledge of public relations principles and practices.
  • Requires ability to gain and maintain satisfactory working relationships with the public and other employees.
  • Requires ability to compose correspondence to taxpayers, their representatives, county officials and others.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires the ability to successfully complete a tax compliance and fingerprint-based background check.

  • Requires ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 25 lbs.

  • Requires ability to travel.

Work Hours:  Tuesday-Saturday. Tues-Fri shift may vary between 7:30am to 5:00pm & Sat 7:30am to 2:00pm
