Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is seeking to hire a Site Superintendent II.  This position will assign and review work, complete financial records and reports, supervise and conduct research on the site for historic materials, site restorations, and program development, implement media information with agency personnel, represent the agency as speaker at civic organizations or public events, coordinate and participate in the maintenance of site grounds, facilities, and equipment, and ensure proper accounting and care of artifacts.  The ideal candidate will utilize their supervisory, organization and communication skills.  Working at the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is not just about having a job; it’s about becoming part of a lasting legacy of conservation, community, and connection. Essential Functions

  • Serves as a full line supervisor.
  • Prepares, submits, and monitors operating and capital improvement budgets and annual plans of work.
  • Develops, coordinates, and implements interpretive programs and activities for visitors and invited guests.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with interest groups, individuals, and other government.
  • Under direction, manages the operation of Pullman Historic Site, Florence Hotel Historic Site, and Douglas TombMemorial.
  • Coordinates the site collection and inventory of artifacts for property control.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skills, and mental development equivalent to a bachelor's degree in park and recreation administration, or natural resource area administration, or in museum administration, history, American studies, or archeology.
  • Requires three years of supervisory experience affording training in various facets of managing an outdoor recreational park, or natural public area, or a cultural/historic site or museum.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of extensive knowledge of American, Illinois, and local history.
  • Three (3) years of extensive knowledge of research techniques, interpretive methodology, and local historical resources.
  • Two (2) years of working knowledge in the operation of IDNR and site administrative policies.
  • Two (2) years of experience presenting oral and written interpretive information before employee groups, organizations, and the general public.
  • Two (2) years of experience working independently under general supervision, completing assignments on a timely basis.
  • Two (2) years of working knowledge evaluating and making recommendations on program effectiveness, policies and procedures.
  • Two (2) years of working knowledge in preparing organized programs to inform and entertain visitors.

Charged with preserving, protecting, and promoting Illinois' natural resources, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) employees oversee water, wildlife, wetlands and oil wells, parks, historic sites - and everything in between. The Historic Sites Division of the Office of Land Management oversees 57 Historic Sites, Monuments, and Memorials. OLM facilitates activities from small group interpretive programming at Historical Sites, to hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, and camping.
