Position Statement

Under direct supervision, engages in semi-skilled activities in the care, maintenance and improvement of site grounds, structures, outdoor recreational and natural programs offered at Wm. Powers State Recreation Area. 

Job Responsibilities

1.  Performs semi-skilled work by performing a range of duties associated with the maintenance of structures and facilities:

  • Operates trucks, tractors, chain saws, and various hand tools while engaged in the maintenance and improvements on site grounds and trails.
  • Mows grass, uses weed whip, and applies pesticides to maintain site grounds and trails.
  • Plows and shovels snow.
  • Cleans and disinfects restrooms and buildings.
  • Empties trash cans and picks up garbage throughout the site.

 

2. Makes repairs of vehicles, equipment, buildings, and signage:

  • Paints physical structures.
  • Installs and maintains site informational signs.
  • Builds wooden fences.
  • Installs and maintains wire boundary fences.
  • Repairs and/or replaces roofs of buildings and picnic shelters.
  • Maintains buildings and picnic shelters; makes minor repair to structures.
  • Repairs and paints picnic tables and stoves/grills.

 

3.  Makes minor repairs to plumbing, heating, air conditioning equipment and/or electrical systems.

 

4.  Performs maintenance and drives state vehicles and equipment throughout the site:

  • Changes oil, fluids, filters, spark plugs, belts, and repacks wheel bearings.
  • Sharpens mower blades.
  • Washes vehicles and equipment.

 

5. Assists in implementing the safety and security of programs at the site:

  • Inspects public use areas and reports public health and safety hazards to supervisor.
  • Assists in the rescue of injured or stranded site visitors.
  • Assures building and gates are properly locked.
  • Notifies authorities in event of emergencies or disturbances.
  • Informs visitors of park rules and regulations.

 

6.  Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires education and experience equivalent to completion of high school.
  2. Requires two (2) year's maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires working knowledge of equipment and tools used in the trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment, farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing.
  • Requires ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Requires ability to inform visitors of site facilities, programs, rules and regulations.
  • Requires physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair and care of site resources, artifacts, buildings and grounds. 
  • Requires light construction duties.

Physical Requirements

  • Requires ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year round basis.
  • Requires ability to lift, carry, and transport loads which may exceed sixty (60) pounds.
  • Requires ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.

Work Hours:  Schedule #1: Thurs.-Mon.: 1/15 to 4/15--11:30am-7:30pm; 4/16 to 10/15--12:30pm-8:30pm; 10/16-11/16--11am-7pm; 11/16 to 1/14--9am-5pm (off Tues/Wed.)
