Position Overview

Under direct supervision, performs routing work in operating a DHS local office switchboard carrying a heavy traffic load; talks to clients during operation of switchboard; serves as back-up receptionist. Performs functions requiring interaction with recipients/clients which regularly involves translating for Chinese speaking individuals.

Job Responsibilities

1. Answers, screens, and routes incoming calls.


 
2. Answers routine non-technical questions and refers callers to appropriate sources of information.

 

 

3. Places and maintains records of long-distance calls for administration and casework staff. 

 

 

4. Serves as back-up receptionist. 

 

 

5. Assists clerical staff with keyboarding and filing. 

 

 

6. Translates functions/procedures into Chinese for clients who cannot speak or read English.

 

 

7. Performs other duties as required or assigned which-are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of high school.
  2. Requires ability to communicate effectively in Chinese at the colloquial level.

 

Qualifying state employees in the employee Upward Mobility Program may complete combinations of specific proficiency tests and training programs leading to a certificate of proficiency in lieu of the stated requirements for this classification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires working knowledge of switchboard operations and telephone etiquette.

  • Requires elementary knowledge of public relations.
