Essential Functions
- Monitor and evaluate all live races for compliance with racing rules and regulations.
- Adjudicate potential violations and report the activities of the races.
- Coordinate with other race officials prior to the start of the daily race program and adjust as necessary.
- Work with Board management and veterinarians to ensure compliance with procedures and rules to protect equine health and safety, including medication and drug administration.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in the horse racing industry, with a minimum of 2 years as a racing official.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience using spreadsheets and document creation software to create reports and simple spreadsheets for reporting, logging and tracking of information.
Preferred Qualifications
- College degree or equivalent with emphasis in horseracing or equine emphasis preferred.
- Minimum of one full race season of experience using TrackManager and ARCI database.
- Minimum of one full race meet actively participating in administrative hearings.
- Minimum of five full race meets working in the Racing Office of a racetrack.
- Minimum of one full race meet of Steward experience judging live races under HISA/HIWU rules.
- Ability to recognize racing interference and knowledge of the process of remedying an infraction.
- Ability to evaluate potential licensees for suitability for licensure.
- ROAP level 3 accreditation or higher, or actively in the process of gaining accreditation.
Employment Conditions
- Ability to travel to all locations under the jurisdiction of the Illinois Racing Board.
- Employee and members of household cannot have had an IRB license or an economic interest in a license holder (including employment) for at least 12 months prior to hire.

About the Agency
The Illinois Racing Board (IRB) was created in 1933, and its legal mandate is defined in the Illinois Horse Racing Act of 1975. The jurisdiction, supervision, powers, and duties of the Illinois Racing Board shall extend under the Act to every person who holds or conducts any race meeting within the State of Illinois where horse racing is permitted for any stake, purse or reward. The mission of the Illinois Racing Board is to regulate horse racing through the enforcement of the Act and its rules and regulations and to ensure the honesty and integrity of Illinois racing and wagering.
