Position Overview

This position is accountable for supervising the Traffic Operation Section which handles Signing, Pavement Marking, Traffic Control, Emergency Patrol, Intelligent Transportation Systems, and Motorist Aide Assistance throughout the district.

Essential Functions

  • Trains, motivates, and evaluates subordinate personnel.
  • Advises district Operations Engineer in matters related to policies, programs, and procedures concerning section field operations.
  • In the course of official travels throughout the district, the incumbent visually inspects all Operations field activities encountered to determine compliance with recognized, acceptable traffic control requirements covered by Traffic Control Field Manual for IDOT Personnel.
  • Prepares, monitors, and authorizes the section's operating budget and available contracts.
  • Oversees the design and accuracy of the preliminary interstate and other freeway signing and striping plans.
  • Coordinates field work with other sections within the bureau.
  • Establishes and maintains marked detours districtwide.
  • Establishes policies and procedures to be used by emergency patrol personnel and the Traffic Management Center, as well as reviews the operations and effectiveness of all Intelligent Transportation Systems.
  • Reviews of the operations and effectiveness of the temporary traffic control utilized throughout District 8.
  • Provides expertise relative to traffic control, signing and pavement markings, plus Intelligent Transportation Systems to all municipalities within the district.
  • Oversees the district’s Intelligent Transportation Systems and Traffic Management Center.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois PLUS five years of experience in civil engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Supervisory experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering.
  • Extensive knowledge of modern methods and techniques as applied to the design, construction, and maintenance of public works.
  • Ability to direct the work of other engineers.
  • Ability to supervise the preparation of complete engineering plans and specifications.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with departmental staff and outside agencies.
  • Ability to make sound decisions in a logical and objective manner.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong understanding of traffic management, traffic safety, and operations principles.
