Position Overview
The Internal Security Investigator position serves as a lead investigator of incidents and complaints of administrative and criminal nature for various areas and agencies. This covers all facilities and their satellite facilities, along with juvenile facilities, and parole offices. The ideal candidate should be able to interview individuals in custody, employees, and management staff to solve and gather facts to conclude cases in a timely manner. Essential Functions
- Conducts/participates in complex sensitive investigations relating to criminal activities of individuals in custody/staff.
- Works with staff assisting in investigations.
- Testifies in court in criminal/civil proceedings as an expert witness.
- Serves as a full line supervisor.
- Conducts random/routine drug and alcohol testing of all individuals in custody, prospective employees, volunteers of Department of Corrections.
- Uses microcomputer and the programs contained therein to gather data for the purpose of formulating reports, responding to internal and external queries and to effectively communicate policy and procedural practice and changes to affected staff.
- Serves on Command Post as Intelligence Coordinator.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of two (2) years of college, with coursework in law, government, liberal arts, history or business or public administration, plus four (4) years professional experience in law enforcement investigatory work or a related field.
OR
Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years college, with major coursework in law, government, liberal arts, history or business or public administration, plus two (2) years professional experience in law enforcement investigatory work or a related field.
OR
Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of a master's degree, with major course work in law, government, liberal arts, history or business or public administration plus one (1) year professional experience in law enforcement investigatory work or a related field.
OR
Requires completion of the F.B.I. National Academy or comparable law enforcement schooling, plus two (2) years of professional experience in law enforcement investigatory work or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience conducting investigations, including interviewing persons, gathering, and compiling pertinent investigative/information data.
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience recognizing and gathering appropriate statements, exhibits and materials acceptable for use in prosecution of cases or disciplinary actions.
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience working in a correctional setting.
- Prefers at least three (3) experience preparing case reports for referral (submitted to States Attorney or facility administrator).
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience interpreting and applying State statutes, rules and regulations concerning conflict of interest of malfeasance of office.
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience in the processing of crime scenes and the identification, collection, and handling of evidence.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience submitting cases and testifying in court.
- Prefers experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, or similar software.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires possession of an active Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card and must maintain active status while in the position.
- Requires ability to qualify with firearms prior to the completion of the initial pre-service training curriculum and annually thereafter in accordance with agency directive and state or federal laws.
- Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
- Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of the position held, is prohibited.

- Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.
