Job Overview
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Bureau of Air (BOA), Air Pollution Control, Field Operations Section, Northern Region Unit B, is seeking an Environmental Protection Engineer 3. This position involves conducting complex and specialized inspections and investigations of industrial facilities, performing advanced engineering analyses, and ensuring compliance with air pollution control regulations. The ideal candidate should have prior experience in these areas and be able to assist a higher-level engineer in the investigation of the design, location, construction, maintenance, or inspection of public and private facilities related to Air Pollution Control.

Essential Functions
- Performs complex and specialized plant site inspections/investigations and performing engineering analysis of
industrial facilities for the Bureau of Air, Field Operations Section, Northern Region, Unit B; - Performs the investigations of emergency situations and complex citizen complaints of air pollution;
- Investigates/evaluates/supports complex enforcement situations;
- Participates and observes higher level staff in meetings such as with elected officials, plant site representatives or
any concerned citizens; - Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated
above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college with a bachelor's
degree in an engineering science. Typically, the subject matter would involve the type of coursework associated with
environmental (sanitary, hydraulic, hydrology, and air pollution specialties), civil (sanitary, hydraulic, and hydrology
specialties), general, industrial, mechanical, chemical, public health, electronic, acoustical or aeronautical engineering or
engineering mechanics or a closely related engineering specialty.
- Requires two years of professional engineering experience in one of the fields listed above.
-OR-
A master's degree in engineering or business administration may be substituted for the required experience.
Specialized Skills (Used for certain BU Employees only)
- Requires two years of experience in inspecting or evaluating air emission sources.
- Requires two years of experience in State and Federal Air Regulations.
Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance)
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience in inspecting or evaluating air emission sources.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience or demonstrated knowledge of State and Federal Air Regulations.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience developing inspection reports requiring the application of advanced engineering
theory.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience in explaining and interpreting agency policy and regulations.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience consulting and advising members of consulting engineering firms concerning
design and construction details of facilities and devices for the control of environmental conditions.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience evaluating the design, construction, maintenance, or operation of
environmental control devices and facilities.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience utilizing a personal computer with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook,
Access and Excel software.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires the ability to travel.
- Requires a valid driver’s license.
- Requires ability to pass physical exam intended to determine if medically fit to wear respiratory protection and function in
high heat stress situations while wearing chemical protective clothing per 29 CFR 1910.12.
- Requires ability to lift heavy sampling equipment (e.g. 50 pounds).

employee should be aware that if offered non-State employment during state employment or within one year immediately
after ending State employment, the employee shall, prior to accepting any such non-State employment offer, notify the Office
