Job Overview
The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Bureau of Air (BOA), Division of Air Pollution Control, Field Operations Section, Northern Region Unit B, is seeking an Environmental Protection Specialist IV to serve as a working supervisor responsible for coordinating engineering staff activities for a group of technical professionals. The ideal candidate for this position will be organized, detailed, and possess the ability to adapt to change in a collaborative, fast paced environment. The ideal candidate will also need to be able to communicate effectively verbally, electronically and in writing with both internal and external stakeholders.

Essential Functions
- Serves as Working Supervisor responsible for coordinating engineering staff activities for the technical
professional for the Bureau of Air, Field Operations Section, Northern Region, Unit B; - Conducts highly technical plant site inspections/investigations at industrial facilities statewide;
- Responds to environmental incidents;
- Develops appropriate compliance terms to address any identified violations;
- Develops, maintains and updates Agency data systems and assignment tracking and scheduling system(s).
- Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated
above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years college with coursework in
physical, life, or environmental sciences, engineering, or geology. - Requires four years of professional experience in the field of environmental protection or a related field.
Specialized Skills (Used for certain BU Employees only)
- Requires two years of experience in interpreting and applying State and Federal laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to
air pollution. - Requires two years of experience in conducting compliance inspections or evaluations of Division of Air Pollution Control
permitted sources. - Requires two years of experience with the principles and operations of air emission sources and air pollution control
equipment.
Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance)
- Prefers two years of experience in interpreting and applying State and Federal laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to air
pollution. - Prefers two years of experience in conducting compliance inspections or evaluations of Division of Air Pollution Control
permitted sources. - Prefers two years of experience with the principles and operations of air emission sources and air pollution control.
- Prefers two years of experience with environmental control systems, facilities, and related techniques, procedures, and
processes. - Prefers two years of experience in applying state laws, rules, regulations and standards pertaining to environmental control
or pollution abatement. - Prefers extensive knowledge of techniques relative to the supervision of a technical and/or professional staff.
- Prefers extensive knowledge of modern inspectional and investigative techniques and procedures.
- Prefers the ability to prepare detailed and comprehensive reports of complex and sensitive field inspection and/or
investigations. - Prefers the ability to analyze and interpret complex and extensive scientific data relating to facilities, installations,
equipment, and environmental control systems and processes. - Prefers the ability to establish and maintain liaison with municipal officials, facility owners and operators, plant managers,
or their representatives, and agency professional staff.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires a current and valid driver’s license.
- Requires the ability to travel.
- Requires ability to pass physical exam intended to determine if medically fit to wear respiratory protection and function in
high heat stress situations while wearing chemical protective clothing per 29 CFR 1910.12. - Requires ability to lift heavy sampling equipment (e.g. 50 pounds).
