POSITION SUMMARY
The Illinois Department of Central Management Services (CMS) Division of Vehicles is seeking to hire a Passenger and Light-duty Automotive Mechanic. This position will perform skilled mechanical repairs and preventive maintenance of passenger and light-duty vehicles for the states fleet and other off-road machinery. POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Under direct supervision of the Suburban North Automotive Shop Supervisor, serves as an in-house mechanic.
- Inspects and performs major repair such as disassemble and repair engines, reassemble engines, differentials, hydraulic brakes, wheel ends, etc. and maintenance to various systems such as diesel, gasoline, multifuel engines, automatic and standard transmissions, heavy duty drive line systems, hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical utility systems and other components requiring service.
- Operates a variety of diagnostic testing equipment to properly identify problems, clear error codes, access live data, perform system tests, and ultimately repair vehicles electronic, mechanical, and emission issues.
- Creates, completes, and submits work orders to supervisor including labor time, labor tasks, itemized parts list, and parts cost electronically for each repair/maintenance procedure performed.
- Performs basic upkeep and maintenance duties for the work area.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of high school or coursework in automotive mechanics or completion of an approved training course.
- Requires experience necessary to qualify as a skilled mechanic.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
- Prefers working knowledge of locating and adjusting mechanical feedbacks in motors and equipment and making necessary repairs.
- Prefers working knowledge of standard vehicle repair and maintenance practices and techniques, occupational hazards, and applicable safety measures.
- Prefers working knowledge of all automotive parts and materials used in the maintenance and repair of passenger and light-duty vehicles.
- Prefers working knowledge of the use of all mechanical hand tools and testing equipment.
- Prefers one (1) year of professional experience demonstrating skill in the use of tools and the operation of the machines and equipment employed in motor repairs and adjustments.
- Prefers one (1) year of professional experience preparing work activity reports.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
- Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime.
- Requires a valid driver's license to perform road tests of vehicles.
- Requires the ability to bring your own toolbox and mechanical tools.
- Requires the ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 lbs. unassisted and materials weighting up to 100 lbs. with assistance.
- Requires the ability to maneuver and work under vehicles, bend, kneel, and stand for extended periods of time.
