Job Responsibilities

Under general supervision of Director of Nursing/Nursing Supervisor, provides professional nursing services during the assigned shift. Provides work-related guidance, instructions and explanations to Licensed Practical Nurse (LPNs) and other direct support staff. Serves as Center-wide medical/nursing resource on the assigned shift during the absence of other professional nursing personnel. Serves as Center Float Nurse for medication administration. Assists with the development and implementation of behavioral programs.

 

SPECIFICALLY:

 

40%       Provides professional nursing services during the assigned shift. Provides work-related guidance, instructions and explanations to LPNs and other direct support staff in the care of individuals, injury reduction, health, and safety, hygiene, treatment, procedures, and the use of equipment. Administers medications per work location needs. Serves as a Center Float Nurse for medication administration on the assigned shift. Serves as Center-wide medical/nursing resource on the assigned shift during the absence of other professional nursing personnel; serves as Center Relief Registered Nurse (RN).

 

35%       Provides professional nursing core to individuals served. Monitors vital signs and physical conditions and reactions to treatments. Provides emergency treatment, implements emergency procedures including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). applying restraints and/or implementing other restrictive, intrusive procedures. Prepares and maintains medical records and histories. Monitors nursing notes and records. Sets up, operates, and monitors special equipment. Inventories, orders, and maintains security of medication, drugs and medical equipment and supplies. Makes rounds of homes, consulting with physicians and other professional staff regarding the individuals' treatment and care.

Job Responsibilities (continued)

10%       Assists with the development and implementation of behavioral programs. Observes individuals' behavior and makes recommendations for habilitation plan; intervenes in potential crisis situations, e.g. suicide attempts, verbal, or physical aggression; provides controls to verify individual safety.

 

5%         Performs quality assurance activities including conducting audits and preparing Infection Control reports, Active Treatment checklists, monthly medical summaries, RN checklist for standards and conducting emergency medical drills.

 

5%         Attends training to keep abreast of latest nursing techniques and concepts. Teaches in-service training to Center and community staff. Provides orientation of homes 10 new staff and trainees.

 

5%         Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires graduation from an approved nursing education program resulting in an associate or diploma degree in nursing or a bachelor's degree in nursing. Requires licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

This class is included as an Upward Mobility Program credential title. Requires working knowledge of diversified nursing principles, concepts, practices, and knowledge of application, use and care of specialized medical equipment Requires working knowledge of pharmacology of commonly prescribed medicines and drugs and their therapeutic and possible adverse reactions. Requires ability to provide treatments and nursing care based on orders of physician and to apply emergency medical techniques. Requires ability to instruct non-nursing personnel and to maintain security of work area and comply with facility rules, regulations, policies, and directives. Must be able to clearly communicate verbally and in written form.

Employment Conditions

Requires the ability to perform or deliver mouth to mask CPR and manual resuscitation.

Work Hours:  10:45 AM - 11:15 PM  

12 hour shifts, 3 days/week, every other weekend off; other days off to be determines upon hire.
