Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking to hire a Corrections Vocational Instructor to work at East Moline Correctional Center. This position is responsible for coordinating and providing individual in custody students with practical knowledge and work skills to facilitate student entry into employment with heavy equipment operating and/or as a commercial truck driver and other Department of Labor curriculum for apprenticeships. In addition, this position will conduct education and outreach activities to potential employers, conduct regular maintenance checks on all computers and simulators used in the Heavy Equipment Training Program, and certify all Department of Corrections and Institutional safety, security, and sanitation procedures are followed. Essential Functions
- Serves as Heavy Equipment/CDL Instructor for Illinois Correctional Industries (ICI) Heavy Equipment Training Program and coordinates and provides vocational instruction to students on Department of Labor curriculum for apprenticeships such as building maintenance, organizational logistics, office management, aquaponic/hydroponic gardening system operations, and various types of service industries.
- Provides individual in custody students with practical knowledge and work skills to facilitate student entry into employment with heavy equipment operating and/or as a commercial truck driver and other Department of Labor curriculum for apprenticeships.
- Instructs individual in custody students in the safe and correct operations of heavy equipment on computerized simulators.
- Conducts education and outreach activities to potential employers to assist in obtaining employment linkage for student individuals in custody that complete the assigned courses.
- Conducts regular maintenance checks on all computers and simulators used in the Heavy Equipment Training Program.
- Certifies all Department of Corrections and Institutional safety, security, and sanitation procedures are followed.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four (4) years of high school.
- Requires two (2) years of practical journey level experience in Heavy Equipment/CDL Instruction.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience operating heavy equipment or driving CDL tractor/trailers.
- Prefers at least three (3) years of professional experience of the practices, methods, tools, and materials of a trade commonly taught in vocational education.
- Prefers at least three (3) years of experience utilizing tools, materials, and equipment of a Heavy Equipment trade.
- Prefers the possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience in a production setting.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience in inventory management.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience instructing curriculum-based programming.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires completion of an approved course in correctional officer training within six (6) months of employment.
- This position is considered light work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(b)). Light work involves lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds. This job may require a good deal of walking or standing, or involves sitting most of the time with some pushing and pulling of arm or leg controls.
- Requires ability to attend seminars, conferences, and trainings to stay current on methods, tools, ideologies, or other industry related topics relevant to the job duties.
- Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
- Requires the ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs, regardless of the position held, is prohibited.
- Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.
