Position Overview

Under direction of Stationary Engineer-Chief, performs journeyman level maintenance repair work and equipment testing at Southwestern Illinois Correctional Center.  Supervises individual in custody crew in repair of facility equipment, machinery, preventative maintenance, and upkeep of grounds.  Conducts on-the-job instruction to develop individuals in custody's skills in mechanical, maintenance, painting, and carpentry trades; may operate power driven equipment; enforces and maintains disciplinary, safety, sanitary, security, and custodial measures.  Maintains vehicle fleet and documentation associated with vehicle maintenance.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Performs maintenance work at the journeyman level in the repair and upkeep of facility equipment, machinery, and grounds.
  2. Assigns and supervises individuals in custody in operation of power driven tools and tractors.
  3. Supervises and directs individuals in custody performing maintenance and preventative maintenance and making small repairs in shop in Maintenance Department.
  4. Maintains vehicle fleet and documentation associated with vehicle fleet maintenance.
  5. Reports infractions of rules by individuals in custody and employees and other significant matters to supervisor for action.
  6. Maintains a daily count of tools assigned.
  7. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably withing the scope of duties enumerated above.

 

Minimum Qualifications

1.  Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school. 

2.  Requires experience necessary to qualify as a journeyman in one of the maintenance or automotive repair trades.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Requires extensive knowledge of tools, materials, methods and standard practices of the trade.

 

Conditions of Employment

  1. Requires the ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check. 
  2. On January 1, 2020, the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act made it legal for residents over the age of 21 to produce, consume and sell cannabis in Illinois. Please note that although the law has changed, the Department will continue to enforce the Department’s zero tolerance Drug Testing policy.
  3.  The use of unauthorized drugs, including cannabis, by an employee, regardless of the position held is prohibited.
  4. Requires completion of an approved course in guard training within six months of employment. 

COVID19 VACCINATION MANDATE:

Governor Pritzker announced a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for all State employees whose job duties require them to work in a congregate care facility. All 24/7 congregate-care facilities operated by the Illinois Department of Corrections are included in this mandate, which is scheduled to take place October 26, 2021.  Administration is currently in negotiations with AFSCME for employees covered under a collective bargaining agreement in regard to this mandate.  The State will offer the exemptions required under law for those who cannot be vaccinated for medical and/or religious reasons.
