Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a candidate to serve as an Electrician at Southwestern Illinois Correctional Center. The ideal candidate will install and maintain all electrical systems within the facility, maintain electrically driven mechanical equipment, provide guidance, direction and instruction to individuals in custody in routine maintenance, and prepare reports and keep records of material and supplies used. Essential Functions

  • Performs routine electrical maintenance inspections in accordance with facility work order system and master craft/routine/cycle lists.
  • Repairs and maintains electrical switchboards, panels, household appliances, air conditioners, television sets, and other apparatus utilizing electricity or its effects.
  • Installs and maintains electrical systems which operate on alternating or direct current circuits and high voltage lines, generators, and appliances through panels, switches, meters, and circuit breakers.
  • Dresses and polishes commutations.
  • Maintains a daily count of tools assigned.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.
  • Requires successful completion of a recognized electrician apprenticeship program and four (4) years of full-time journey level electrician experience; OR eight years of full-time journey level electrician experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers at least five (5) years of work experience performing electrical routine maintenance inspections.
  • Prefers at least five (5) years of work experience repairing electrical switchboards, panels, household appliances, air conditioners, television sets, and/or other apparatus utilizing electricity or its effects.
  • Prefers at least five (5) years of work experience performing the installation of electrical systems which operate on alternating or direct current circuits and high voltage lines, generators, and/or appliances through panels, switches, meters, and circuit breakers.
  • Prefers at least five (5) years of work experience maintaining an effective  preventative electrical  maintenance program.
  • Prefers at least five (5) years of work experience maintaining an inventory of tools and equipment.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
  • Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.
