Job Responsibilities

40%
1.    Performs labor related to the maintenance of state bridges or highway road network.
•    Repairs bridge decks, bridge expansion joints, bridge rails, bridge bearings and rockers and other minor structural repairs.
•    Cleans and treats bridge decks, hub guards and handrails with preservatives.
•    Responds to emergency weather situations, as instructed verbally or in writing, to inspect roadways and bridges and remove hazardous material/obstacles, some weighing up to 50 pounds, from roadways, bridges and drainage areas.

2.    Operates CDL Class A licensed vehicles.
•    Operates motor graders, loaders, backhoes, maintenance trucks, snowplows, salt spreaders, compressors, jack hammers, generators, special hydraulic inspection equipment and other equipment.
•    Washes, greases, and conducts minor repairs and preventative maintenance activities of these vehicles and equipment.

3.    Performs routine housekeeping duties at headquarters
•    Cleans, maintains stockpile of materials.
•    Performs other tasks associated with general care of headquarters.

4.    During snow and ice conditions, assists in snow and ice control.
•    Operates snowplows, spreads salt and sand.
•    Plows and removes snow.

5.    Maintains records of materials on hand, distributes materials and maintains written inventory of equipment assigned.

6. Maintains required on-the-job records of equipment usage and equipment servicing in compliance with state policy and procedures.

7. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

1.    Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of high school.
2.    Requires possession of a Class “A” CDL with appropriate endorsements, to include X or N and no airbrake restrictions.
3.    Requires one year driving experience immediately preceding appointment free of incidents which could result in license suspension or revocation.

Conditions of Employment

1.    The conditions of employment listed here are incorporated and related to any of the job duties as listed in the job description.
2.    Requires successful completion of a pre-employment background investigation, a pre-employment physical examination, a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening as well as on-going random drug and alcohol screenings.
3.    Requires the ability to perform arduous labor outdoors in a variety of adverse conditions including, but not limited to, hot, cold, wet, windy, muddy, confined spaces, active construction sites, climbing steep terrain, roadways open to traffic and wading in water while dealing with adverse environmental conditions such as poisonous plants, animals, insects, rodents, and snakes.
4.    Requires ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions while maintaining productive working relationships.
5.    This position is considered medium work as defined by the US Dept. of Labor (20 CFR404.1567(c)). Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
6.    Operations employees are subject to call at any hour of the day or night on any day of the year in order to respond to emergencies outside of normal work hours. As a result, negotiated rate employees are required to work reasonable amounts of overtime when necessary. Any bargaining unit employee who may be required to engage in a call out shall respond to the call as quickly as practicable but in no situation can the response time exceed 45 minutes.
