The Illinois Department of Revenue is seeking to hire a Special Agent in the Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI). BCI is a highly specialized law enforcement group that conducts criminal investigations into violations of the Illinois Tax Acts and associated financial crimes. Special Agents investigate violations of the Illinois Tax Acts and related financial crimes. This position requires prior successful completion of the Revenue Special Agent Field Training Program.

Job Responsibilities
- Under general supervision, as a sworn peace officer, independently conducts journeyman level inter-state and intra-state criminal investigations of tax fraud, tax evasion and other illegal acts which circumvent or violate tax laws administered by the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR).
- Drives to remote locations to obtain facts and evidence through surveillance, under cover assignments and interviews with taxpayers and their representatives, complainants, witnesses and others, analysis of books, records and bank accounts to determine extent and scope of violation, such as manipulation of funds, alterations of records and identification of additional issues, e.g., conspiracy, false statement, concealment of facts, etc.
- Meets and confers with taxpayers, their representatives, retailers, business associates and others.
- Serves as a team member in the more controversial or complex investigations involving one or more entities or individuals where in facts or evidence is difficult to establish, principles are of public prominence and widespread news coverage occurs.
- Prepares detailed progress and final reports of investigations.
- Assists in preparing cases for prosecution by the Attorney General, the State’s Attorney and the United States Attorney.
- Attends law enforcement meetings and advanced training programs involving new or revised statutes, rules and regulations, IDOR policies and procedures, and investigative techniques needed to enhance investigative skills and knowledge.
- Works closely with Federal, State and local law enforcement agencies in conducting joint investigations or in exchanging information within legal limitations.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires completion of four years of college, with major coursework in accounting, law enforcement, business administration, pre-law or related areas; up to two years of police investigative or enforcement experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the college training.
- Requires successful completion of the Revenue Special Agent Trainee training program.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires the ability to successfully complete a tax compliance, fingerprint-based and in-depth background check.
- Requires successful completion of a firearms qualification course annually.
- Requires the ability to maintain LEADS certification while employed.
- Requires a valid, appropriate driver’s license and the ability to travel on frequent basis.
- Requires the ability to use and secure a state issued mobile device, e.g., cellular phone, laptop computer, tablet, etc.
- Requires the ability to drive, secure and maintain a State/Revenue issued vehicle.
