Position Statement
Under direct supervision, engages in semi-skilled activities in the care, maintenance and improvement of site grounds, structures, outdoor recreational and natural programs offered at Franklin Creek State Natural Area.
Job Responsibilities
1. Performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and operation of equipment used in the operation of the site and program support tasks:
- Mows site grounds and clears vegetation utilizing tractors, bush hogs, sickle bar mowers, riding and push mowers, chain saw and weed eater:
- Repairs roads and parking areas utilizing tractors equipped with end loaders and rear blade
- Operates air-driven and electrical power tools
- Assists in other turf maintenance such as mowing, weed eating, etc.
- Applies herbicides and pesticides around posts, parking areas, mill pond, etc
2. Performs overall general maintenance of the grounds internal and external throughout the site:
- Collects and disposes of garbage and litter:
- Cleans and disinfects restrooms
- Performs off-season maintenance which entails repairs throughout the site.
3. Performs routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment:
- Schedules the maintenance of equipment.
- Assists in the inventory controls and record maintenance.
- Makes routine repairs such as engine overhauls
- Changes starters, alternators, etc.
- Welds broken equipment
- Repairs and sharpens blades and chain saws
4. Provides leadership and direction to volunteer crews i.e. Franklin Creek Conservation Association. Franklin Center FFA, and Rock River Trail & Horseman's Association.
5. Designs and constructs signs:
- Installs and paints signs
- Reroofs shelters and pit privies
- Repairs trail stairways and bridges
- Builds and repairs picnic tables
6. Informs visitors of site rules and regulations:
- Advises appropriate authorities of non-compliance.
7. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires education and experience equivalent to completion of high school.
- Requires two (2) year's maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Requires working knowledge of equipment and tools used in the trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment, farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing.
- Requires ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Requires ability to inform visitors of site facilities, programs, rules and regulations.
- May require ability to read and diagram blueprints.
- Requires physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair and care of site resources, artifacts, buildings and grounds.
Physical Requirements
- Requires ability to withstand exposure to the elements and work under adverse conditions on a year round basis.
- Requires ability to lift, carry, and transport loads which may exceed sixty (60) pounds.
- Requires ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.
Employment Conditions
- Requires possession of a valid driver's license.
- Ability to pass a background check.
- Ability to obtain a pesticide operator's license within 6 months of employment.

Work Hours: Nov.-April: Mon-Fri 7:30am-3:30pm (Sat/Sun off); May-Oct: Mon-Fri 7:30am-3:30pm, with rotating weekend shifts (Thurs-Fri off on weekends worked).
