Position Overview
Serve as a Site Assistant Superintendent I, under general supervision of the Site Superintendent, to supervise a subordinate staff, assist in preparation of annual/seasonal plans of work, assist in preparation/maintenance of site records/reports, and participates in site and facility maintenance and equipment repair at Ferne Clyffe State Park.
Job Responsibilities
1. Serves as a working supervisor:
- Assigns and reviews work
- Provides guidance and training to assigned staff
- Counsels staff regarding work performance
- Reassigns staff to meet day-to-day operating needs
- Establishes annual goals and objectives
- Approves time off
- Prepares and signs performance evaluations
2. Under general supervision, supervises and participates in the maintenance of all site and satellite area grounds and machinery:
- Oversees and conducts maintenance on buildings, roads, guard rails, gates, signs, trails, picnic tables, fire grills, privies, play equipment, water and wastewater systems.
- Performs minor repairs to plumbing, heating and electrical equipment.
- Cleans, greases, paints and makes general repairs to tools, machinery, tractors, and vehicles.
- Keeps a preventive maintenance file on all motorized equipment.
- Mows grass, trims shrubs, cuts trees and trims weeds.
- Assigns and assists with bathroom maintenance throughout the parks and satellite locations.
- Directs and empties garbage cans and picks up litter throughout the park.
- Plans and completes projects by preparing specification.
- Researches prices for needed project materials.
- Travels to satellite locations to perform duties.
3. Participates and supervises the activities of subordinate staff engaged in inspecting site and satellite areas for safety hazards such as flooding, downed trees, malfunctioning maintenance equipment, damaged day use equipment and facilities:
- Verifies buildings and gates are properly locked and unlocked.
- Prints camping permits for the public.
- Informs visitors of rules and regulations.
- Conducts public drawings to allocate hunter quotas.
- Contacts proper authorities in the event of emergencies or disturbances.
- Assists in the rescue of injured or stranded site visitors.
4. Prepares weekly work project schedules:
- Assigns, reviews and controls work activities for all subordinate staff, seasonal staff, contractual and volunteers.

5. Coordinates use of construction materials and maintenance supplies:
- Maintains inventories of supplies and prepares warehouse orders.
- Contact vendors concerning the purchases of materials and services.
6. Provides on going training to subordinate staff, seasonal, contractual and volunteers to orient and update them with the site and satellite area equipment:
- Applies pesticides/herbicides and chemicals for vegetation control.
- Provides toxic substance training.
- Administers first aid and CPR.
7. Prepares reports and keeps records such as camping, attendance, hunting and fishing, W-76-D, gas and oil, employee accident reports and timesheets.
8. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonable within the scope of duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree with courses in parks & recreation administration, natural resources administration or public administration.
- Requires one year of related functional supervisory experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Elementary knowledge of the principles and practices of site administration, including site interpretation, natural and/or cultural resource conservation, structural and grounds maintenance, public relations, and personnel administration.
Employment Conditions

- Possession of a valid drivers license.
- Ability to lift, carry and transport loads which may exceed 60 pounds.
- Ability to work over rough and broken terrain.
- Ability to work under adverse environmental conditions on a year round basis.
- Ability to obtain herbicide/pesticide operator's license within 6 months of employment.
- Ability to administer First Aid and CPR and maintain certification.
