CORRECTIONS MAINT CRAFTSMAN

Position Overview:

The Corrections Maintenance Craftsman position performs maintenance work at the journeyman level in the repair of institution buildings, equipment, and machinery at an assigned Illinois Youth Center. The ideal candidate would not only possess these skills, but also be motivated to instruct youth that have been committed to the Department of Juvenile Justice in methods, techniques, and tools of the trade, and transfer their skills to youth that have a desire to learn. This position is part of the team of Maintenance staff that work under the direction of the Stationary Engineer-Assistant Chief, to maintain the buildings and grounds at an assigned Illinois Youth Center facility. Essential Functions:

• Under direction, assigns maintenance or repair tasks to employees and youth performing maintenance repair work at the apprentice level in one or more maintenance trades.
• Maintains and repairs keys and locks, and utility systems within the institution, such as plumbing, electrical wiring or steam system.
• Assists and serves as back up with the coordination of vehicle repair and maintenance as per Administrative Directive.
• Assists and serves as back up for the accountability of all tools and equipment belonging to the institution.
• Reports infractions of rules by youth and employees to superior for disciplinary action.

Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.
• Requires experience necessary to qualify as a journeyman in one of the maintenance or automotive repair trades.

Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance):

• Prefers at least two (2) years of experience applying knowledge of tools, materials, methods, and standard practices of the trade.
• Prefers at least two (2) years of experience planning and laying out work according to requirements of assignment, and to lead youth by example and instruction.
• Prefers at least one (1) year of experience with Microsoft Word or equivalent computer program.
• Prefers at least one (1) year of experience enforcing disciplinary, safety, security, and custodial measures for the control of youth.
• Prefers at least one (1) year of experience applying knowledge of institutional rules, regulations, and requirements for managing youth behavior.

Conditions of Employment:

• Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
• Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
• Requires completion of an approved course in guard training within six months of employment.
• Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This may require the ability to work evenings and weekends.
