Position Overview:
The Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice is looking to hire a highly organized and detail-oriented Licensed Registered Nurse, Corrections Nurse I. This position will be responsible for performing direct nursing care to individuals in a congregate care setting. The successful candidate shall possess a valid Illinois License and good oral and written communication skills, be a self-starter, and be able to carry out nursing assignments pursuant to the direction of medical personnel in a correctional setting.
Essential Functions:
- Provides direct patient care and primary nursing care services.
- Reviews and maintains records.
- Maintains security of medications, medical equipment, and supplies in accordance with facility policies.
- Monitors and maintains compliance of safety and sanitation in patient treatment and examination rooms.
- Reviews medical records and completes health status forms on individuals in custody for transfer to ensure continuation of care.
- Participates in the Quality Assurance Programs through concurrent monitoring of staff compliance with established policies and procedures.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Requires graduation from an approved nursing education program resulting in an associate or diploma degree in nursing or a bachelor's degree in nursing.
- Requires completion of the Corrections Nurse Trainee program or one year of nursing experience (within the last five years) in an acute care setting; preferred experience includes emergency room care, medical/surgical nursing, and/or ambulatory care.
- Requires licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Illinois.
- Requires current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training and certification is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance):
- Prefers knowledge of diversified professional nursing principles, concepts and practices.
- Prefers knowledge of pharmacology of commonly prescribed medicines and drugs and their therapeutic and possibly adverse reactions.
- Prefers ability to provide professional nursing care based on orders of the physician and specific needs of the patient.
- Prefers ability to set up and use specialized medical equipment.
- Prefers ability to evaluate patient condition and behavior and prepare accurate detailed records of such observations.
- Prefers ability to apply emergency medical techniques such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation, control of bleeding and airway maintenance.
- Prefers ability to instruct non-nursing personnel in the proper practices and procedures of patient care.
- Prefers ability to maintain security of the work and comply with all facility rules, regulations, policies and directives.
- Prefers ability to successfully clear an in-depth background investigation and a urine drug test.
- Prefers ability to adhere to detailed rules of conduct with regard to appropriate interaction with inmates or students.
Conditions of Employment:
- Requires the ability to pass an IDOC/IDJJ background check.
- Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
- Requires ability to attend seminars, conferences, and trainings to stay current on methods, tools, ideologies, or other industry related topics relevant to the job duties.
