Position Overview

Under direction of the Juvenile Justice Chief of Security, serves as supervisor in a Juvenile Justice facility directing security sanitation and control within the facility to ensure the safety of youth and staff. Directs delivery of program services through subordinate staff. Reviews subordinate reports in support of youth discipline. Completes required reports and notifies staff of Issues, concerns and activities. Plans and coordinates pre.service and in-service training.

Job Responsibilities

1.  Supervises staff.

2.  Inspects facility to ensure the security and safety of youth and staff in his/her assigned area or zone.

3.  Prepares and submits reports in support of youth discipline.

4.  Plans, coordinates and conducts pre-service and in service training.

5.  Operates vehicle to transport youth.

6.  Attends staff meetings to discuss problem issues.

7.  Attends workshops and in-service training to attain professional development and update skills and proficiency to coordinate specialized service delivery programs.

8.  Coordinates review of facility compliance with policies and procedures.

9.  Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. Requires successful completion of two (2) years' professional staff experience involving the care of youth in a State of Illinois Juvenile Justice facility, and providing for the safety, security and well-being of youth and staff.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires extensive knowledge of juvenile behavior problems, and the treatment and interventions required to develop successful and appropriate behaviors. 
  • Requires working knowledge of adolescent pyschological development, mental health issues affecting juvenile offenders, and social development concerns. 
  • Requires extensive knowledge of rules and regulations, post assignments, and specific procedures for carrying out work assignments. 

 

Conditions of Employment

  1. Candidates must be over the age of 21.
  2. Requires possession of an appropriate valid driver's license. 
  3. Requires physical agility and strength to stand and walk for up to three (3) hours at a time, to run for short distances, and to provide physical intervention and control, as necessary, in order to protect and/or restrain individuals.
  4. Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  5. Requires ability to pass a drug screen. On January 1, 2020, the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act made it legal for residents over the age of 21 to produce, consume, and sell cannabis in Illinois.  Please note that although the law has changed, the Department will continue to enforce the Department's zero tolerance Drug Testing Policy.  The use of unauthorized drugs, including cannabis, by an employee, regardless of position held is prohibited.

The mission of the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice (IDJJ) is to build youth skills and strengthen families by promoting community safety and positive youth outcomes. Over 900 staff members from across various departments-security, programming, education, mental health, and more-collaborate with the understanding that youth are physically, emotionally, and cognitively different from adults. The department provides extensive services to young people through a developmental, treatment-focused model of care that builds youth resiliency, engages families, and promotes community safety at the five youth facilities it operates across the state. IDJJ serves and houses approximately 150 youth and is responsible for approximately 500 youth on Aftercare in various Illinois communities.
