Position Statement

Under direct supervision, regularly performs semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of site grounds, site buildings, and equipment associated with site operations at Mississippi River State Fish & Wildlfe Area. 

Job Responsibilities

  1. Operates trucks, tractors, bushhogs, riding/hand mowers, chainsaws, hand tools, and weedeaters while engaged in maintenance and improvement projects on the site's grounds, trails, waterways, day use areas; mows grass, cuts brush and trees; completes vegetation planting and clearing; plows and shovels snow; patches roads; operates vehicles with a GCWR fo 26,001 or more pounds with air brakes to haul equipment.
  2. Performs minor repairs to plumbing/heating/air conditioning equipment and/or electrical systems; installs and maintains wire boundary fences; re-roofs buildings and picnic shelters; repairs and paints picnic tables and stoves/grills. 
  3. Registers hunters and operates check station; conducts blind inspections and blind drawings; assists in staking blinds.
  4. Makes, maintains, and installs signs; makes major repairs or welding to vehicles and equipment; paints physical structures.
  5. Performs routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment by changing oil, fluids, filters, spark plugs, and belts; washes vehicles; sharpens mower blades.
  6. Inspects public use areas for hazards such as flooding, fallen trees, erosion, broken picnic tables; tactfully and courteously advise/educate public concerning rules, regulations, and violations; observes and reports all significant law violations per respective administrative rules; on an intermittent or seasonal basis, performs vehicular and foot patrol of the site grounds.
  7. Sells camping permits and collects fees; assists in the rescue of injured or stranded site visitors; in the event of emergencies or disturbances, contacts the proper authorities; informs visitors of rules and regulations.
  8. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and two year's maintenance or farming experience preferably associated with the building trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment and machinery;
  • Requires possession of a valid Class A Illinois Commercial Driver's License with air brakes designation;
  • Requires working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the trades and/or the operation of heavy equipment or farm machinery and implements and/or warehousing; 
  • Requires ability to prepare and maintain operating records and reports;
  • Requires ability to read diagrams and blueprints;
  • Requires ability to inform visitors of site facilities programs, rules, and regulations;
  • Requires ability follow written and oral instructions;
  • Requires physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair, and care of site resources, artifacts, buildings, and grounds;
  • Requires ability to lift, carry, and transport loads which may exceed sixty (60) pounds;
  • Requires ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year round basis;
  • Requires ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.

Work Hours:  8/15 to 10/15: Thurs-Mon 8:00am - 4:00pm, Tues-Wed off (Waterfowl Prep Season); 10/15 to 1/1: Thurs-Mon 4am-12 Noon, Tues-Wed off (Waterfowl Check Station Season); 1/2 to 8/14:  Mon-Fri 8am-4pm, Sat-Sun off.
