TEMPORARY POSITION

 

 Under direction, develops, executes, and presents programs, activities, and events to the general public, school groups, and special interest groups at Illinois state parks, state fish and wildlife areas, conservation areas, state natural areas, and state recreation areas.  Employment estimated to run from May 15, 2021 through October 31, 2021.  Work schedule:  Wednesday through Sunday and Monday-Friday, Alternating Weeks 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., 1/2-hour lunch, NOTE:  Schedule subject to change due to operational needs.

About the Agency

Charged with preserving, protecting and promoting Illinois’ natural resources, Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) employees oversee water, wildlife, wetlands and oil wells, parks, historic sites – and everything in between. Employment opportunities vary greatly, often providing employees the chance to work indoors and out in a dynamic yet relaxed environment.

Job Responsibilities

Under direction, develops, executes, and presents programs, activities and events to the general public, school groups, and special interest groups at Moraine Hills and Volo Bog.

 

30%        1.  Prepares and delivers educational information designed to instill appreciation and understanding of conservation ethics, as well as ingrain an environmental awareness into park visitors.

 

30%        2.  Develops a familiarity with department rules and regulations; develops working knowledge of park history, park geologic features, and trail system in order to answer questions regarding the historical, ecological, and recreational aspects of the park, and surrounding area.

 

25%        3.  Assists in the development and implementation of the natural or outdoor recreational site’s interpretive program plan; plans evening and daytime visitor activities; plans and implements foot, aquatic, and automotive tours, inspects trail conditions; assists in preparing press releases for use by the local or area news media, organizes and schedules interpretive programming efforts with area educators in order to maximize benefits for visiting school groups; plants trees and/or prairie grass with school groups; assists in planning and constructing temporary exhibits and displays for the site’s interpretive center in making appropriate alterations and improvements to the center, maintain and update social media outlets; travels throughout the site.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college, with courses in journalism, English or public speaking; prefer two years professional experience in a public education and information program in a public or private agency; 

requires elementary knowledge of methods and techniques of disseminating information to the public.  Requires posession of a valid Illinois Class D driver's license.
