Position Overview
Under administrative direction of the Assistant Superintendent, serves as supervisor in the planning, development, coordination and evaluation of programs for students in elementary school (0-3 program, preschool program, and Elementary grades, including health and physical education, pre-school and parent infant education, and parent education and training. Provides leadership to the elementary school program and its staff in the use of special methods and techniques for instructing infant/toddlers who are deaf or hard of hearing, parents and elementary school-age children. Assists the Assistant Superintendent in the management and coordination of the total academic program. Utilizes sign language in daily performance of duties.
Essential Functions
- Serves as Elementary Principal for the Illinois School for the Deaf in a K-12 education program(s) for students who are deaf and/or hard of hearing.
- Serves as a working supervisor.
- Serves as school administrator for and assisting with scheduling for Eligibility Reviews (ER) and Individual Education Plans (IEP).
- Monitors student placement, parent training. and class schedules.
- Coordinates and supervises preparation of detailed records and reports of the operations of the elementary school as well as records of the progress and abilities of individual elementary school students.
- Maintains effective controls on instructional materials, equipment and specialized teaching aids used within the elementary school building.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires a master’s degree in education of the deaf or a directly related field and a current and valid Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE)- issued Professional Educator License (PEL) with a General Administrative Endorsement.
- Requires three (3) years of experience in teaching students who are deaf at the elementary level.
- Requires the ability to communicate utilizing sign language at the Intermediate Plus level.
Preferred Qualifications
- Five (5) years of teaching experience with students who are deaf and/or hard of hearing.
- Three (3) years of professional experience in the administration of a K-12 education program(s) for students who are deaf and/or hard of hearing.
- Three (3) years of professional supervisory experience assigning work, providing guidance to subordinates, recommending counseling and/or discipline following collective bargaining agreements, training staff, approving time off, and preparing and signing performance evaluations.
- Three (3) years of professional experience planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating educational support services including transition services for a public or private organization.
- Three (3) years of professional experience establishing and reviewing educational curricula, lesson plans and progress for students including Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
- Three (3) years of professional experience ensuring educational programs are compliant with school codes, state and federal statutes and regulations.

- Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
- Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
