Position Overview

Under direct supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks involved in the maintenance and operation of the automotive equipment at the Illinois School for the Deaf (ISD). Drives to transport students by bus and/or automobile. Monitors the ongoing maintenance of State-owned vehicles assigned to ISD. Performs simple repairs and adjustments to vehicles. Operates a variety of motorized equipment. Picks up or delivers mail.

Job Responsibilities

1. Performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks involved in the maintenance and operation of the automotive equipment at the Illinois School for the Deaf. Drives to transport students by bus and/or automobile to and from school, work programs, sporting events, school events, field trips, and any other school program or school trips.

 

2. Monitors the ongoing maintenance of State-owned vehicles assigned to ISD.  Maintains records of the equipment and submits written reports as required.

 

3. Performs simple repairs and adjustments to vehicles.

 

4. Operates mowing equipment, tractors, snowplows, trucks, end loaders, buses and other motorized equipment.

 

5. Picks up or delivers mail from the Post Office and Illinois School for the Visually Impaired (ISVI).

 

6. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school.
  2. Requires one year’s experience in performing a variety of semi-skilled mechanical and manual tasks in the maintenance and operation of automotive or related maintenance equipment. 
  3. Requires a valid class B-commercial driver’s license with a passenger endorsement (CDL-P) with air brakes and a valid School Bus Driver Permit.

Conditions of Employment

  1. Requires the ability to meet all agency vaccine/health-related policies and guidance.
  2. Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  3. Requires ability to pass a drug screen. On January 1, 2020, the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act made it legal for residents over the age of 21 to produce, consume and sell cannabis in Illinois. Please note that although the law has changed, the Department will continue to enforce the Department’s zero tolerance Drug Testing policy. The use of unauthorized drugs, including cannabis, by an employee, regardless of the position held is prohibited.
